Just saw this in a video and then read some reference that "during timeouts/breaks, Karch would stand at the net" rather than sit or take a break. Anyone know if this was "his M.O." or just maybe during Sunday finals etc. I LOVE it, but wanted to know a little "history" on this: Did it occur regularly?

Only when he was ahead and not the one calling the timeout.

Without a doubt, Karch was almost always the best conditioned athlete on the Court, even though he didn't really begin his beach career full time until he was 32 years old. Even in the worst conditions, when Whitty (rest his soul - he eventually conquered his cramping issues) and AJ were taking bags between matches, cramping severely, and just trying to survive, Karch was stoic out there. My guess is he did it for two reasons: One, as a kind of "what's wrong, you wussies - need a break?" way of getting into their heads, and two, because I really think that sometimes he believed that the energy needed to walk over to the chairs during a timeout used up more energy than just staying out there and staying as focused as possible. Maybe I am wrong about both reasons, but in any event, you are correct - it was frigging awesome to watch! I remember being at a match at Disney on Florida in June/July one year, and it was like 112% humidity, totally cloudless, and 98 degrees every day. People in the stands were passing out simply watching, and freaking Karch was like "yeah, whatever." I always heard that he buried a lot of much younger players who were trying to keep up with Mike Rangel's plyometrics and other training sessions, which is probably why his shoulder died long before his conditioning did!!!
