Great news for all the young athletes that wish to play in college and perhaps earn a scholarship.
Bad news if any college sand athlete wanted to try and earn an Olympic berth while in college.
The NCAA rules stop play outside of school as soon as classes begin in Sept thus eliminating any hopes for a young American to play up with a pro to earn points and compete for a spot on team USA 1&2.
This will continue to put US players behind the curve in age as the rest of the world has players in late teens & early 20's battling in FIVB events, earning points & high level experience toward possible O berths.
Let the sand athletes play outside of school until late Oct since their season doesn't start practice until Jan. A simple change that could help push new athletes up the ladder quicker and lower the competitive age for all USA hopefuls.
That's why Summer left college, you just cannot do both while in school you'd have to leave your partner before the points schedule is complete.

Will the previous Sand "Champions"--Pepperdine 2012, Long Beach St. 2013, and Florida St. 2014--be now officially recognized as NCAA Division 1 Sand National Champions?

Will the previous Sand "Champions"--Pepperdine 2012, Long Beach St. 2013, and Florida St. 2014--be now recognized as NCAA Sand Champions? I don't believe that's how it works. They're AVCA National Champions. Also, I'm pretty sure Pepperdine won in 2014. Schools can call them national champions but not NCAA champs.

So, future Sand champions will be crowned AVCA National Champions, as well? No, starting in spring of 2016 the winners would be NCAA champions. It shouldn't be any different than the way football championships or AIAW championships and other non-NCAA sanctioned championships are listed.

I seem to remember the mention of renaming it Beach Volleyball instead of Sand Volleyball once it becomes championship status, but didn't see any mention of a name change in the NCAA release statement. Anyone hear anything?

Is there a list of colleges sponsoring D3 teams somewhere? Here it is : Perfect! I didn't know any and thought this was the best option for sites when I googled it. www.avca.org/sand/I suffered through the growing pains with MVB but that finally took hold and should be an exciting growth still over the next few years.
