So does anyone know if Toshi is coming back? Does USA volleyball want him back? I heard there was some internal problems with the team at the Olympics. How can this happen? These players have dedicated so much time and effort all to have it wasted by some trivial stuff the week of the biggest competition of their careers.

If Toshi comes back it is b/c they can't find anyone else. The head coaching job at USA is not a top 10 job, which is unfortunate. The girls were overtrained and on the road all summer. Toshi is a great trainer, but as a head coach in this country I believe there are few worse with communication and decision making. How do you keep Phipps and Haneef in all olympics when both hit below .200 with Nmanani and Metcalf on the bench? Anyone see the results from Volleymasters in June? Metcalf led the team in hitting and total points and was 3rd in the tourney. You don't lose to the Dominican at the Olympics, that's like USC getting beat in the final 4 by someone like Utah. Time for a change in Colorado Springs.

Is the job not a good one because of the lack of money or is it just sooo tough to develop a team that can consistently compete at the top level? What current successful college coaches would be interested in the position. Some coaches (Gimillaro, Hebert, Dunning, Cook)are so set in their jobs making HUGE money that I doubt they would leave to pursue a 4 year opportunity that would involve so much travelling and a cut in pay. I would think they would interested in someone like Jim McLaughlin. Rumor has it he was a finalist when they hired Toshi. Look at what he has done with the Washington program. In 3 years he has them in the Top 5 after not even being ranked and the doormat of the PAC-10 when he got there. I guess Oregon is the doormat but Washington was close. I'm sure he is making HUGE money at Washington so that may not even be a possibility. I hope USA can find someone that can relate to the women better than Toshi.

...snip... The girls were overtrained and on the road all summer. I don't know about overtraining, but Cuba and Brazil, were both off their home continents as much as USA was. Russia, Italy, Germany and China all had tournaments (at least one weekend) in their home countries, but only Russia in their home city. They were off continent, or at least out of their countries almost as much as the others. Italy and Russia both had to qualify for the olympics late as well - in Japan. If the USA wants to stay at home they need to put on their own tournament like the Yeltzen Cup, or the Valle D'Aosta.

We will never see a top 10 coach consider the job at USA until there the program starts making a commitment to win. They pay both the players and coaches crap. Ok for example....Puerto Rico Rocks, but how does Willoughby choose that over a chance at Athens? That is the mountain top of her sport. The USA program is at a cross-road right now....we haven't had a medal in 3 Olympics. They first need a coach that can pull the team together, make them care again, and that will actually respect him as a coach, we'll be here again in 2008. Phipps, Cross-Battle, and probably Scott, Sykora, Logan, and Ah-Mow are done. From what I have been hearing, quite a few others don't want to return if no coaching changes are made. We need a leader in there who makes the players see the importance and value of an Olympic medal and leads them there....clearly this is not Toshi.

I am glad that you acknowledged that Logan likes to spend time in our wonderful city! How come she doesn't spend all of her time in the Bay Area,,,,,,you know, in Palo Alto, where she went to college???

Most of us all knowledgeable about volleyball, but don't we know that coaching a top ten or a top four team in women's Dvi I is nowhere near a women's international team? Even former head coach Dr. Liskeyvich(sorry for the spelling) fessed up that he thought that his UOP team could defeat team Canada when he saw team Canada be continually defeated by team USA in the '80s, but when he took over the reins it was a whole different ball game for him. From what I remember reading in VOLLEYBALL MONTHLY and VOLLEYBALL he didn't realize what he was up against and what it takes to make a winning team against other countries who devote so much more time to the sport than we(USA) do. I too hope that Team USA will look into finding someone who knows how volleyball operates here in this country. When Toshi was hired the selection committe thought he was the one to bring the program back to prominence which in some ways he did, I mean didn't the teams do well in zone, Grand Prix, World Championship and Cup tournaments? On the other hand I can see why he was a total failure because the team didn't do well last month and tied for 5th place in the '04 Olympics and because of that he will be evaluated and really criticized for not winning a medal at the Olympics.

So, let's see...
If they divert money to the USA coaches' salaries (esp. the head coach), there will be less money for other resources, like the web, equipment and supplies, and travel, etc. They just need a bigger pie.
