Saw on twitter (I think) these 2 are teaming up for AVPs this year. Could be an interesting team by the end of the year.

I think Page has a great deal of potential, particularly if he dedicates himself. If he does, I can't see him with Lochhead at the end of the year.
It does raise, once again, the question of why, when the FIVB is so proactive about making changes they perceive as making the game better and more interesting, they dont take steps to prevent guys like Page and Doherty from becoming the default for big men.
If you are filming a tv commercial for Sunscreen or Gatorade which group do you want to feature:
1. Doherty, Keenan, Page, Phil
2. Scott, Stoklos, Lion King, Tri

I too am looking forward to finally seeing Page on the court. Him playing with Lochhead insinuates(to me at least) that Page has some setting abilities.

I'm not sure they are the default yet, but you obviously need someone with a decent amount of height up front in most cases. What kind of rules would prevent that though?

I can't see Page being able to pass the ball. Did he improve a lot in Italy or wherever he was?

Old school rules and court size. Some would still play but guys like Doherty and Page would get served and shot off the court

I can't see Page being able to pass the ball. Did he improve a lot in Italy or wherever he was? Did Page quit his indoor team in Italy or get let go? Never really got off the bench from what I saw. It is unfortunate that he has always been overhyped and will never live up to it. One thing he is not and that is a beach player.

He got second in the AVP next tournament out here in AZ a couple of weeks ago - losing in the finals to Ty Loomis and his partner. I didn't go, but I was told that he passed and set pretty well - the thought was that he compared favorably to Avatar from a couple of years ago. Not the AVP for sure, but a lot of strong AAA players from AZ, CA and NM.

There is something wrong with entry rules when a 35 year old Ty Loomis, veteran of 91 AVP events can somehow be eligible for an AVPNext event.......

Sure, I know, but the growing prevalence of geeks (old school carnival usage) in the game is a problem. The FIVB so image conscious they once, disgracefully, mandated much smaller bikinis for women than many were comfortable wearing, is ignoring that side of the men's game. Whoever said Page is not a beach player is wrong. Modern beach is made for him. What were his weaknesses indoors? I only saw him play a few times so this may be wrong but it seemed to me his biggest weakness was a lack of dynamism, including not hitting very hard. On the beach that won't matter as much, nor will poor blocking form. This is an older video but watch how easily he deals with Tri with any kind of approach.

One of the guys from Utah that won it last year was also 35. I don't think he had played avp events before, but it seems kind of weird having old(relative) athletes eligible for it. You'd think it would be more targeted towards younger up and coming players, not guys that have been around forever winning local/regional competitions.
