Good for Sarah! Happy to hear she's not decided to hang up the sneakers after not making the Olympic team. She can still contribute.

Recently, USAFAN asked me how Sarah had been after being cut. I hadn't answered him as she actually hadn't thought much about it because she was busy pursuing opportunities to stay active in the sport. While the Team was at the Grand Prix, she flew to LMU to help with one of their camps and look into what might be happening on the West Coast volleyball collegiate circles. At LAX, she ran into Char Tagaloa who talked to her about the possibilities of a graduate assistant coaching position at Nebraska and maybe working with Pavan. In the meantime, Sarah's agent had been in contact with teams in Italy when he got contacted by the Besiktas club about having Sarah sign with them. After placing second in the European Championships last season, they want to make a serious run at winning it next time. So, she flew over for a tryout and to get acquainted with the team officials and coach. She is looking forward to continuing to play at a high level and contributing to a winning program.
As for the results so far for the USA Team, she is as disappointed as everyone else with how the Team has struggled. Since I am a Kansan, I have always rooted for Sarah, as has probably been obvious in my posts. (As a midwesterner, I also root for Metcalf). So, in my biased point of view, if Sarah hadn't suffered shoulder problems, she could have had a more positive impact on the Team's chances in these OG's. If you consider the Team's blocking successes in the past with her and either Bown or Scott at the net, you have to admit that she is at least as effective as the 6'7" Haneef in taking away the opponent's OH -- go back to USA's match against Barbara Jelic in Sydney. As for her hitting, her collegiate awards attest that before her shoulder problems, she could hit a heavy ball. Of course, that was long ago, now.
After looking back at her decision to stay and train at OTC last winter, she may have been better off just going to Puerto Rico for their short season rather than taking the workout load at Camp Toshi all winter. By summer, she was really struggling physically and mentally to stay in the game. But now, after having some time off, she is ready to resume her playing career (and to make some nice deposits in her bank account, of course).

Glad that inspite of what happened, she never dropped off the radar. She also must have a pretty good agent looking after her best interests. Was she seriously looking at coaching? I know it's a moot point at this time, but that would have been interesting!

Besiktas got a VERY surprising 2nd place in Turkish league ahead of Eczacibasi (who had half of Turkish NT as well as Barbara Jelic on its roster). They will be playing in IECL this year and would like to make a good showing and of course they will be playing for the championship in our league....

Well...If anyone wants to get a look at Sarah before she makes her way overseas, she is playing in the LMU alumni tournamnet on Aug. 28th.
