Huntington Beach Oilers win their 101st match in a row and their third Division 1 CIF Southern Section Championship in a row. I would like to get enthusiastic about this, but I am not. I think the change in CIF transfer rules are great if you are an Oiler fan, but horrible for everyone else. How will everyone feel when the Oilers win their 250th match in a row?
Congratulations to Corona del Mar (note, I am not a CdM parent) for actually having a home grown team that an excellent coach developed into a team that almost beat the Oiler all-star team in 5 last night. CdM did not rely on transfer students to achieve this accomplishment.
I was talking to a friend who is in his twenties last week who wanted to play VB at Mira Costa High School back before the CIF-SS rule change. He told me that he had to sit out a year to accomplish that. He did it, but think how rarely it would happen if that was the penalty. Each year the Oiler all-stars bring in the best talent that their coach's recruiting talent can attract and the new transfer all-stars only have to sit out a few games and then they are on the court performing. I guess this brings up 2 questions:
1. Is this fair to the home grown kids from Huntington Beach who want to play varsity volleyball but get pushed aside for the new arriving all-stars?
2. What is the nature of high school sports competitions? Is it to see who is the best recruiting coach or to see who can develop the talent that he has?
I would like to propose to the CIF-SS that if the transfer rules stay as they now stand that they create a new division called the All-Star Division for any team that recruits talent to the school rather than coaching the freshman who arrive at the school to maturity. This would level the playing field and help everyone understand the value of the trophies that they bring home at the end of the season.
Alternatively, in lieu of the new All-Star division being created, I vote that CIF-SS return to the old 1 year benching for transfer students.
Time for a change. CIF-SS Division 1 volleyball has become a yawner.
On to consecutive victory #250 - Hail Mighty Recruiting Oilers!
