Call me a homer as an ISU alum, but I am very excited about the Cyclones this year. This is the deepest and most talented team I have ever seen in Ames. I believe this is a top 10 team by year end and a serious Big XII contender that no one is talking about. Schaben: I believe they will redshirt her and attempt to find what position she should transition into. If I had to guess she ends up the pin. Tons of upside. West: Has potential, but not sure she sees the court over the other middles. Vondrak: Same as West. Lazard: Explosive freshman who will compete for a position on the middle or opposite. Serious hops! Bailey: Lefty freshman with tons of upside. Will compete for a position on the pin. Might start right away. Harris: Can play ds or set. Will play in some capacity. Horner: Starting setter last year. Has experience, but baf timing with Bowman coming in. Hillegas: Insane freshman athlete. Could set or pass. Berta: Will compete for ds position. Phillips: Freshman with some serious heart. Will compete for ds/libero role. This roster can go many directions, but I expect the starters to be: OH Capezio OH Kuhrt MB Knuth MB Conaway OP Bigbee S Bowman L Nolan I've heard they plan to keep Schaben in the middle. And I agree with your assessment on Hillegas. That kid is ridiculous.

Pretty sure Schaben is being recruited to play on the left. Either way, there's no way she doesn't start as a freshman. And their incoming setter is fantastic.

ISU had a great Spring season and now with 2015 coming in, this team's talent potential will keep them ranked all year. With the graduation of 2 seniors, 3 ranks in class of 2015 plus grace from England all coming in PLUS and the strong returning players, we will be able to contend for the Big IIX Title. We had one player forgo vb her senior year and 2 transfer out (both redshirtds I believe?)

Among the top dozen or so conferences - the Big 12 has by far the largest % of returning starters/production. I would think that Iowa State is probably in the best position to possibly challenge Texas in an improved conference. Kansas, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Baylor look (to me) to also be better than last year.

Article announcing the ranking as their 2nd highest class (2012 was 6th): www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=210114416With ending the 2014 season RV on the AVCA poll, ranked 17th on the final RPI list, second round NCAA appearance, wins over 3 ranked opponents and the 8th ranked recruiting class, I would be extremely disappointed if they were not in the top 25 on the pre-season poll.

Marquette. I was able to watch this weekend in person. Marquette has a good team, but Iowa State didn't compete like they could have. Marquette set almost every ball to their outside who was very dynamic. They had a strong middle and setter and passers who didn't give up on plays. I read the article in the Ames tribune sounds like a poor showing by ISU which is disappointing a 3-0 sweep isn't good but the team is young so tons of upside but I haven't seen Marquette but they aren't exactly a vball power team.

Why is Bowman not in the conversation? I figured she would start from day 1!

After this weekend, my guess is that they will redshirt Bowman. Thought that might also be the case with Bailey, but now that she has played in a set, that burns that option. With Bigbee not having a stellar weekend, I believe that made that decision to play Bailey. ISU needs to determine sooner than later if they are going to run a 5-1 or 6-2 so the rest of the pieces can be decided quickly. I thought their defense looked pretty good and once the offense can be figured out, it will fall into place. I have full confidence CJL will figure it out in short order.
