call me stupid, but i think i remember reading here that someone said that ball states outsides were average, mediocre at best, what have you. i just crunched the numbers(for 2 outsides and the opposite) ball state (41-11-74) for an average of .405 hawaii (31-8-65) for an average of .353 they might not have the names, but dont knock them b/c they're not from the MPSF. my money is on ball state to upset in the semis and reach the national championship. on a side note, since i dont get to see much live ball, who's got the better squad, lewis or ball state? lewis may not have had meyer(not sure on that) but who had the better squad in hawaii? heres the link for the ball state/hawaii stats......... www.ballstatesports.com/media/html/mvolleyball/match03.htm

I dont think that stats alone indicate how good Ball State can be. Hawaii did hit lower from the outside, but 2 of the 3 outsides hit for .500 or higher. The last outside, Ching, had a bad night and hit for well below his average. But as far as Ball State is concerned, I was impressed with them. They are a good squad with some nice hitters. Delgado was really good. I expect him to really lead Ball State this year.
For now, I would say Lewis might be the stronger team. Lewis had a bunch of serving problems in the first matches, but I think they will smooth out a little more. They have the balance if they are passing well, which is what leads me to believe that they have the advantage. But Ball State is really close with them and will certainly challenge.

You can't crunch the outside's stats based on the numbers alone based on the fact that the oponents MPSF teams face are much better every night on average. The most important aspect of the outsides is passing. I'm pretty willing to bet the UH outsides are better passers than Ball State. (And I don't even like UH). Hitting, there is no comparison.

I agree that Ball State is not as strong as they have been in the past. When watching them play, their outsides are not that strong. Their middle, Denmark, is their star this year. And the guy that really stepped up to the plate when they played Penn State was Josh Lee, their opposite who doesn't even start. I expect them to finish no higher than 3rd in the MIVA
