If Cathy George was ever to elevate MSU over the usual 10-10 mid-pack of the conference finish, this should be the year ? Highly ranked recruiting classes are now Juniors and Sophs, freshman setter now a year of experience, OH hitter transferring in etc etc. Back to the 6-2 to take advantage of depth at OH / RS hitters ?

I'd say this is the best set of starting hitters MSU has had in recent years with Bailey, Reinig, Fitterer and possibly Garvelink being capable of putting up All-American numbers and a talented dual-threat setter in Minarick. However, in order to make the jump to the top of the conference they'll have to make sure passing is solid, losing nearly 80% of their passing from last year and the luxury of having Moster pass half the court. Monson and Muir each played DS a fair amount so their success at libero could really determine MSU's success. I'd say they stick with the 5-1 bc Minarick is an excellent front row setter but Peterson has been impressive on the Big Ten trip. Really exciting season ahead and they have potential a top ten team (top 3 in the B1G) on the backs of Reinig and especially Bailey, who may be the hardest hitting OH duo in conference next year.

Wow. Top three? Good as they are, I have a hard time imagining them making it into the top five.

I think they have the potential to be top 3 but if I had to put money on it I'd say their passing and having the toughest schedule puts them behind Illinois, PSU, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Purdue (in no particular order). MSU placed 7 last year and Autumn Bailey is a difference maker that I think can push them above Ohio State, and the two U of M's.

I'm excited to see Autumn Bailey elevate her level of play at Michigan State. I agree with trianglevolleyball, though, that Moster's graduation leaves a huge set of kneepads to fill.

MSU will be strong for sure, but I agree that they will have to shine on defense in order to utilize their front court weapons. All politics aside, I think that everyone agrees that MSU doesn't have the toughest schedule in the B1G. That distinction goes to the Michigan Wolverines. The variances in the schedules between the two are that MSU gets home matches vs. NW and Iowa, with road matches at Rutgers and Purdue, whereas Michigan hosts Wisconsin and Illinois and plays on the road at Ohio St. and Penn St. Advantage/Disadvantage (depending on your perspective) to the Maize and Blue.

Ah yes, you are correct. I hadn't looked at the schedules and just misremembered what I had seen from the earlier schedule analysis conversations. My mistake.

Any guesses about the starting lineup for next year? Here is my guess:
OH: Reinig/Bailey M: Fitterer/Tompkins Opp: Garvelink S: Minarick L: Muir
Next season will be interesting, but I would be (pleasantly) shocked to see them finish above 5th in the Big Ten. Here are my question marks:
1. As echoed by everyone, the defense and passing will be huge. Muir seemed to play the most backrow so I could see her being libero. I know nothing about the new DS recruit (Sarah Washegesic), but I would put my money on Muir.
2. Bailey is undersized and I wonder if that will catch up with her in the Big Ten.
3. I think Minarick will run a 5-1 again. I can't see a 6-2 with this group; I don't think there is any real upside to it.

She was playing at MU where their conference is not the toughest and arent playing top ten teams that often. So I think it's going to be hard at first. When she was playing against Illinois her first season she had a hard time hitting against the block. She's not used to seeing those kinda blocks. But I think she can learn, Kellie Bates is undersized and she is doing alright. Although I do think Bailey is much better than Bates.

I think MSU will do well next season they have all the offense to beat great teams like Wisconsin and Illinois. But I'm not sure how they will do on the defensive side. They lose Kori who was a big part of MSU volleyball.

She definitely has the potential to prove herself as an effective attacker in the B1G. But I do agree she has not really seen any big blockers in the Big East Conference and that could definitely catch up to her in the B1G. I hope she can do well because she is a really exciting player to watch! Sad that she left Marquette where she was an absolute dominant player.

OH: Bailey and Reinig MB: Garvelink and Fitterer S: Minarick Opp: Tolliver L: Monson
Have Bailey, Monson, and Tolliver pass all the way around and keep in Reinig in back (not passing) for extra offense when needed.
