To be fair, that ball is worth $2 million, minimum. People have done dumber stuff for much less money. Still, I don't think jumping dude really thought this one out.

That didn't look like it was that big of a distance to jump. Sure, you risk twisting an ankle or something, but I don't think there is much risk of qualifying for the Darwin award unless you go head first somehow.

Saw a guy jump into a similar area at Safeco Field (as it was called back then) for a HR ball, and he was grabbed by security and taken away for "entering the field of play" even though it was behind the wall. I don't know if they let him keep the ball or not, but they may not have.

I wonder if they do anything about those guys that run out onto those grass "batters eye" sections that some ballparks have when a HR ends up there

I wonder if they do anything about those guys that run out onto those grass "batters eye" sections that some ballparks have when a HR ends up there I imagine it's a stadium-by-stadium policy. But the area I was referring to is dead center field under the "batter's eye" at the Seattle park, an area behind the fence that is known as the "sod farm" because they grow grass there they they can use for quick patches of spots on the field that get torn up. The ball went in there, the guy jumped in and got it, and then he climbed back out. At which point security grabbed him and took him away. I was standing right next to him, so I heard him arguing that he didn't go onto the field of play, but they said that what he did counted as doing so.
