Has to be Adrian right? Two top four finishes on the FIVB after barely managing that on the AVP.
You could go down the list of Adrian's past partners, Grotowski, Slick, Belov and last year if you put them all in a pot with Adrian and said, "One of these will be contending internationally" I defy anyone to say they would have taken Adrian. I would have laughed in your face if you predicted these results for him.
Granted this week's draw is softer than Matt Heath's abs, but still. Slick got Rosenthal and the high seed that came with him. Adrian has been in the qualifiers and has played a lot of high seeds.
Dana Camacho has got to be thinking to himself, "Is this what would have happened if I had tried" as he takes ninth in another strong regional tourney.

He didnt but Dana and Adrian are very similar players, the difference being that Adrian is much more committed than Dana was. Dana always held back from really committing and trying to be a great player.

I believe Rangheri also won an open this year with someone else.

I agree that you have to consider Adrian's partner, but I also wonder if Andrian is more committed now. I remember a few years ago, he was a bit pudgy and winded every match. Watching the Italian coaches in St. Pete, I would assume they have him training a bit more seriously now. Another point may be, are his unusual style and "tricky" plays catching teams by surprise? I believe Gibb/Patterson beat him badly in pool play. Is that because they know his game and his weaknesses and will the other teams adapt?

Dana always held back from really committing and trying to be a great player. So they are similar players except for probably the most important aspects in sports? Work ethic, mental toughness, desire, competitive nature, commitment, etc. This is a really poor comparison that people make based on skyballs and size. Its like comparing Vince Carter and Michael Jordan (similar size, athleticism, both born with gifts). Its a joke to put Adrian and Dana in the same sentence. (And no I am not comparing Adrian and MJ, Im just showing how big of a difference the non physical aspects of the game make)

You don't think Vince Carter looks at MJ or Kobe and wishes he had put more time in? Its a great comparison because it shows how much will, desire, and attitude matter even in today's big man skewed game

Natural talent is. There were hundreds of NBA players during Shaq's prime who worked harder, but didnt have half his talent. Shaq frequently showed up fat, out of shape, and disinterested. Then he would win because he was naturally bigger and faster. Why is Karch the greatest (if you accept he is?) Desire, luck, but mainly talent. For at least ten years of his career, Karch was the most physically gifted player on tour by a mile. You think Sinjin didnt want it as much? Hov? Of course they did, but talent showed through. Likewise now, the best team on tour, when they arent injured is Rosenthal/Dalhausser and those guys barely give a F. Why do they still win a third of the FIVBs they enter? Natural talent.

I though this too when I saw that result but then Adrian beat Hyden/Bourne who presumably would have the same advantage. When I looked at the soft draw he had this weekend, I thought maybe he was just lucky this year, but when I looked at match results he has beaten some giants
