Not a hell of a lot of time for that to happen. The guy's a great coach, but he ain't a miracle worker. Miracle worker is reserved for Kelly Sheffield as of recently. Having Carlini arrive at the same time didn't hurt, I think they both deserve equal credit.

It helps, of course, if you can find a few great players. McLaughlin stumbled upon Thompson and Morrison in Seattle's backyard, and Tomasevic fell in his lap - they took him to the championship as much as he took them. When Sanja got on the plane to fly to the U.S., she thought UW was in Washington D.C.

The standard line is: it takes 3-4 years to bring in and develop your own players while you wait for the players from the former regime to graduate (or leave). In college football, most of the recent national championship teams have been coached by coaches who have been at their schools for less than 4 years. The only one who won despite being there a long time was Mack Brown at Texas, in his 7th year. Granted, they were still working with top recruiting classes from the previous coach, so that makes it easier.

ND was BAD and they didnt have much talent when he got there.

It amazes me how any program at Notre Dame or Texas can't be at the elite, elite level. I would think they should be able to recruit any kid they want. They have more licensing sales than any other institution, therefore the most fans. They also have virtually limitless resources for recruiting. How can they not be among the best in every sport?

Depends on if they support/emphasize women's sports. A lot of "football" schools don't. JMac is at ND because that's where his wife's family is, not because they're a volleyball school. He's also Catholic, so there's a religious affiliation.

It should be worth noting McLaughlin won his first match at Notre Dame 3-1 over Middle Tennessee on Sunday (I know, I know, it's not Stanford or USC).

Why is everyone so touchy? Sheesh. Many people tanked on the 1st week contest and the 1st poll was shredded................#7 North Carlina lost both their matches.

Notre Dame will be among the elite in a couple of years.

Notre Dame won three matches in the ACC in Debbie Brown's last season. ND just lost to two of the teams she beat. They were swept at home Friday night by Boston College (-12, -19, -17).

For all the blasting we do of other coaches on here, we really seem to be giving the ND staff a giant pass.
Against BC, Notre Dame played 6 kids who were PrepVolleyball senior aces and had two more on their roster that didn't play (I don't know if Collins and Bonneval are out due to injury or coach's decision). Boston College had two senior aces.
I would find it hard to believe that the previous coaching staff simply made those kids so much worse that with 8 months of training, a group of highly touted recruits have any excuse to lose to BC that badly.
What is going on???

Time will tell. Not enough time yet. I do believe JMac is a good coach but you would be amazed at how many poor coaches coach elite teams.

Have you watched them play? I saw the ND vs FSU match, and at times ND looked like world beaters. At others, they looked like a very bad team that had never played together. I think there was one stretch where their setter -- who is a competitive player who is really trying to be a gamer -- got called for hands like four points in a row (maybe five). And they were all fair calls. JMac subbed her out, and the back up is someone they "recruited" from intramurals at Notre Dame. Seriously. That's why they're not good. Give the man some time.

I like their setter, Maddie Dilfer, daughter of Trent. I watched her play in high school. She is only a sophomore and already a captain. That says a lot. I believe she has what it takes to turn it around. It is probably good that J-Mac took her out. I'm sure she will learn a lot by that, and will realize that she has to earn it to be on the court. My prediction is that we'll see her back in the starting lineup soon, playing better than ever.
