Have you watched them play? I saw the ND vs FSU match, and at times ND looked like world beaters. At others, they looked like a very bad team that had never played together. I think there was one stretch where their setter -- who is a competitive player who is really trying to be a gamer -- got called for hands like four points in a row (maybe five). And they were all fair calls. JMac subbed her out, and the back up is someone they "recruited" from intramurals at Notre Dame. Seriously. That's why they're not good. Give the man some time. I like their setter, Maddie Dilfer, daughter of Trent. I watched her play in high school. She is only a sophomore and already a captain. That says a lot. I believe she has what it takes to turn it around. It is probably good that J-Mac took her out. I'm sure she will learn a lot by that, and will realize that she has to earn it to be on the court. My prediction is that we'll see her back in the starting lineup soon, playing better than ever. I think her play is a big reason they are having the season they are. Just not a very strong player.

This thread is absurd and the thread title is textbook passive-aggressive.
The ND VB program was clearly under-performing and needed a major change. No one expected a "Great Notre Dame Renaissance" in first season of a new coaching staff.

But I get annoyed at the reverence some people have for J Mac, a GREAT coach who I'm sure will do good things eventually. I still maintain some people thought he would show up at ND and suddenly they'd challenge for the ACC title. It's a similar feeling for those that thought UNC was suddenly a perennial top 10 program.

For the denser folk, there's a difference between a prediction and a goal.

For the denser folk, there's a difference between a prediction and a goal. That's one quote among many. For the denser folk, the fact that you've picked that one quote doesn't mean that's all that was said. For example: "Our team goal is to win the ACC and it's a very realistic goal"

What no one expected was for Notre Dame to take a step back. They've already lost at home (including two sweeps) to all three ACC teams they beat under Debbie Brown last season.

We often step back to regroup and move forward. Tear down to rebuild. Vultures go find another rock to sit on.

Yes, this was always going to be a complete overhaul; player-wise and culture-wise

Dear Troll; Please find and quote anyone on Volleytalk who thought miracles were imminent. We'll wait. Oh relax. You can't have fun? People were saying that the Notre Dame turnaround would happen quickly, as in this year. Not everyone, just some. I'm not going to search for it. You know it happened. You're the one with your panties in a bunch.

I believe she has what it takes to turn it around. It is probably good that J-Mac took her out. I'm sure she will learn a lot by that, and will realize that she has to earn it to be on the court. My prediction is that we'll see her back in the starting lineup soon, playing better than ever. She came back in later in the match and did a little better, though still had trouble making clean contact at times. I liked her, too -- tough, athletic, leave-it-on-the-floor type. My point was that technically she has a very long way to go, and there is really no one behind her at this point.

The walk-on-from-ND club-team-setter started and played the entire Syracuse match yesterday. Not nearly as gritty or experienced, but put up hittable sets. They came very close to beating Syracuse in 5. Not sure what is off with Dilfer, as she played much better than this in high school/club and is a real competitor.

It can be frustrating for everyone when the setter is not performing. It can be especially hard psychologically for the setter when her sets are getting called. I was happy for her when I learned that J-Mac was heading to ND. This is her chance to become great. He obviously sees something special in her, making her a captain as a sophomore. My gut tells me that she will get through this and emerge a stronger person and a better setter. Time will tell.
