The "Chanticleers?" I had to look that one up. A rooster, apparently.

Dunno if it was mentioned before, but the CCSA also incorporated beach volleyball and will rep LSU, Tulane, Florida State, FIU, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, South Carolina and a couple more I can't remember. It was the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association and they rebranded to CC Sports Association to account for volley.
How many autobids does that come to now? Is it too many for an 8 team tourney?

I believe that it stands as eight. Div.I is looking pretty good. Still dunno why Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns don't get on the wagon.

So the PAC12, ASun and CCSA conferences are sponsoring beach volleyball. Any other conferences?

So the PAC12, ASun and CCSA conferences are sponsoring beach volleyball. Any other conferences? WCC and Big West are as well, I believe. If they're all getting autobids, that leaves 3 at large, which I think is OK. You really are pushing out at the limits of an 8 team tourney already though.

Is there any official verification on to what conferences get automatic bids? ASun seems not to be at the same level as the top teams in the other conferences mentioned.

That is the whole point of conference automatic bids - anyone can get into NCAA championship. However, you can take the Atlantic Sun off of the automatic bid list for this year. Coastal Carolina will not be playing a full schedule until 2017, so the ASUN still only has 5 current NCAA Beach teams. They will not get an automatic bid unless an exception is made.

Now that Beach Volleyball is an official sport of the NCAA, I foresee this coming in the future for the sport. As indoor D1 volleyball has slowly been dominated by the Power5 conferences in all phases such as selection of at large teams, location of sites and Regional and AA teams, I see the same direction that will be taken for NCAA D1 Beach Volleyball. The first step was taken with Gulf Shores being a fixture instead of the California shores where the sport has been dominant for decades.

There are zero auto bids for the 2016 national championship. Going forward, a conference gets an auto after they have have sponsored beach for two consecutive seasons with a minimum of six programs as an NCAA championship sport. In other words, whatever went down prior to 2016 (like the ASun getting an auto bid) has been wiped from the books, so to speak.

That's fine for now but that still seems like a bit of a logjam in two years. 5 autobids and 3 at large is OK right now when there's not that many good teams, but I can see 3 at large not being enough to account for the worthy non-champs in two years. ESPECIALLY if the sport continues to grow like it has already.

Keep in mind that the sport is in it's NCAA infancy - there will be tweaks made for years to come: number of teams in the championship, selection criteria and so on. The 2016 model might not be what we see in, say, 2019. I've already heard ideas floated for expanding the field. Of course, much of it will depend on eventual participation numbers - 60 schools? 80? 100?

I heard something similar, but slightly different. Basically this: "A conference gets an auto after they have sponsored beach for two consecutive seasons with a minimum of six programs that meet the minimum rules for NCAA competition and sponsorship." Which elimates ASUN previous work since they have had only 5 teams. However, weren't there some new volleyball conferences established last year? If so and they meet these criteria, they would have 1 year of the 2 year process already done.

Agreed - bro lives in Ft Myers, so have been to a few Florida Gulf Coast matches while down there visiting, and also went to Sarasota to watch one of those 4 team invitational-type tourneys - gotta say that it was a little like being at an AVP (OK, maybe an NVL) event with several matches going on in different courts! Was also surprised at the relatively decent turnout (even though I know most of it was likely friends and family), so we are looking forward to finally getting to Gulf Shores in May!
