Wish they would bring back the pairs championship.... maybe the AVCA will hold something unofficial before or after this.
I wonder if they requested bids from other cities to host and received an underwhelming response.

Schools and the AVCA are pushing hard with the NCAA beach VB committee about it. There were at least six bids for the championships. Three finalists were Gulf Shores, Atlanta, and Tavares, FL. Gulf Shores was awarded the event for 2016 & 2017, and bidding will be opened up again after 2017.

There are promoters in California (and Hawaii) interested in hosting. The problem is budget. The cost of lodging, beach permits, etc in California means pretty much any bid to hold the event in Santa Monica, Hermosa, Huntington, Santa Cruz - no to mention Honolulu - is not going to be as financially attractive to the NCAA compared to what Gulf Shores can offer. That beachfront hotel room in Gulf Shores at $85 a night in May? $325 a night in California. And while I would love to see the national championship on the west coast, I gotta say that Gulf Shores puts on a very good event.

No one is going to outbid Shaul and his team @ The Hang Out Productions for this event anytime soon, imho.

Shaul Zislin has been a big supporter, but the guy who really made Gulf Shores happen is Phillip Bryant (director of USAV Gulf Coast Region). Also doesn't hurt that Gulf Shores has had access to a chunk of that $20 billion settlement from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill to spend on the national championships.

He was in support of continuing the pairs championships. It's too bad the NCAA couldn't make a combined budget work or be creative and ask for some outside support until the next budget cycle.
The individual aspect generated opportunities for more than twice as many schools to participate and at least 24% more athletes.

Will conferences with enough teams competing get an automatic qualifier?

That has definitely been considered, although I don't know where it stands to date. The NCAA doesn't have a problem with AVCA holding a pairs championship directly after the team championship ends, but there are a bunch of cost and logistical issues that would need to be worked out. We'll see.

The furthest west that it'll ever come, will end up being Texas imo. Rice University needs to get on-board and host in Galveston. Corpus Christi would be the other option.
Los Angeles' second city of Long Beach could possibly accommodate too. There would always be competitive, reasonable rates in comparison.
Of course anywhere in Florida.
Pairs would be nice but there has to be some trade off.

What trade off is required to host pairs?
50% more schools get to participate, 25-30% more athletes get to compete .
NCAA should have waited until they had the proper budget in place to hold a combined.
The trade off might be : less ncaa staffing & overhead, an event training staff so each school doesn't need to send one, pairs travel light with only a coach & no school rep causing more overhead, pinch Shaul for free room & board for the teams, pinch CBS because they should have a wider long term view of the sports potential, no more advisory board , pinch each school for 2 years until the next budget cycle.
Now it's about the athletes again and not a committee tearing the sport in half because they couldn't be creative in the funding & budgeting process.
