From today's Chicago Sun-Times, a paper which mentioned the MIVA Finals in agate type at the bottom of the page: www.suntimes.com/output/campus/cst-spt-lewis06.htmlI believe every single paper in Chicago carried significant stories about the Lewis win. All of the newscasts that I saw also made mention of the victory, with CBS showing the final celebration. PTI makes a David/Goliath reference. Currently, 156 high schools in Illinois have boy's volleyball. At 15 players per team, thats 2,340 boys who say this, read this, and holds their heads up higher because they play volleyball. It publicity like this that will expand the sport's horizon past California.

The Lewis win was also the #1 Play of the Day on SportsCenter. The entire match was awesome, speaking as someone who was there. With the entire place rooting for BYU, I was glad the old-timers from Lewis were able to pull it off.

The final was also discussed during the 'mail/questions' segment yesterday by Tony Kornheiser & Michael Wilbon on the ESPN show 'Pardon the Interruption.' A fan's e-mail asked if the Lewis win wasn't the biggest upset in all of sports so far this year.
Tony & Michael admitting to not knowing much about volleyball & that they hadn't even heard of Lewis University until they received the e-mail. Lewis's D II status was mentioned re: the Flyers upsetting the D I big boys. Tony questioned why there were no Cali teams in the final because "thousands of schools out there" play volleyball. (In our dreams!) Tony ended the spot by saying he doesn't know much about the game but that volleyball is a good sport.
Where were Marlowe & Cox when we really needed them?
