New to this site and an avid fan of volleyball. I don't understand RPI and it appears I am not alone for the average viewer/fan. If the RPI determines who/where teams play and is so darn important...why is it not utilized all season, on all media. If I watch (for example) #1 USC play #3 Washington, that ranking comes from the coaches poll. Why not the RPI rankings? Is this done to confuse the average fan or to frustrate the average fan so that they stop paying attention? Why have two ranking systems? It just feels wrong, feels like a cloak and daggers type situation. AVCA is a poll by selected coaches and has nothing to do with selection of seeds. I would think TV uses this because it is the only poll available to the media and they only use polls when placing the ranking on TV. RPI is Rating Percentage Index and 1st Rating ranking comes out in the beginning of October. The RPI is not a poll. RPI works like this: 25% is your teams winning % 50% is your opponents winning % 25% is your opponents opponents winning % Here is a genaric explanation of RPI. Some things may not pertain to Women's Volleyball but you can get the gist of how it works from this link(downloadable document file). RPI explainedThis is the major way NCAA selects the top 16 seeds but there are other factors like: Head to Head play What a team does their final 10 matches Bonuses for winning against teams ranked 1-25 in RPI (moved approx 2 positions up) Bonuses for winning against teams ranked 26-50 in RPI (moved approx 1 position up) Teams receive a bonus of approximately two positions in the RPI for playing 50 percent of their nonconference schedule against teams ranked 1 through 75 in the RPI. Penalty for losing to much lower ranked teams There are other considerations but I don't remember them right now.

Thank you psumaui. Interesting that it started with basketball and other sports adopted this methodology. I appreciate the link. Mental toughness at end season seems important, but I guess hard to measure. I will ignore rankings, seedings, and just continue to enjoy the incredible talent out there.

That may just be The 13th Wonder of The World One reason the media clings to the AVCA poll is it's available for the first match of the season. There's a pre-season coaches poll and then a poll every single week. RPI is not available prior to the start of the season and I believe the first RPI is released about the 2nd week of October.

The conundrum is Florida, currently #4 in RPI, but 3rd in the SEC. The NCAA doesn't care about losses, unless to a Bottom 50 team, which means that, except as they figure into RPI, Florida's losses to Hawaii, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, and Auburn, or possibly @ TAMU, still on the schedule, simply do not matter. They do care about who're the major conference champions, however.

RPI is "Hocus Pocus." Anyone remember which Coach said this? No, "Hocus Pocus" is the "magic" phrase. The NCAA chose instead to use "Pocus Hocus", which they own, even though it doesn't work.

(Your links are "blouie".) Those articles are from 2011 and, it should be noted, NOTHING has changed. It's like way back in the old days, I had a TV on which I'd busted the channel dial. Instead I used a set of pliers, which although very clunky served its purpose, changing the channel. RPI is sort of like that - a clunky stop gap that serves its purpose, to set a tourney field, but with very few actually liking the result.

Going by RPI with some minor adjustments, how probable does this look:
DesMoines 1 Minnesota 16 Missouri 8. Washington 9 Nebraska Austin 2 Texas 15 Texas A&M 7 Wisconsin 10 UCLA
San Diego 3 USC 14 Ohio St. 6 Kansas 11 Stanford
Lexington 4 Florida 13 Kentucky 5 Penn St 12 Louisville
- I kinda have a problem with Florida as the #4 given their SEC losses, so perhaps they're bumped to 6 and Washington or PSU gets the 4 ? - I think Nebraska is sent to Des Moines no matter what - I think A&M is sent to Austin no matter what

It will be very difficult for 4 SEC teams to get a seed and more updated RPI's have Kentucky outside the top 16. I doubt Florida or Kansas will get a seed as good as their RPI. The rest is free game.

Agreed re: sec teams, but looking below 16, who else can they reasonably seed?

Maybe BYU ?
And Kansas is top 10 in RPI and coaches poll, I don't see how they can reasonably deny them a seed.

I can see them moving Kansas down but I imagine they'll get sent out west for balance. Also think Washington will be sent somewhere besides San Diego regardless.
