Speaking of which. I find it kind of hypocritical some of these USC fans trashing Tomasevic, when Gysin hung around USC for 6 years. uh oh, we touched a nerve...

One USC fan said it, and Gysin only hung around so long because she literally could not play. For a player to bounce back from injuries and continue to work hard is admirable. Amanda Gil should have gotten another year as well imo. You always have a lot of comments about USC and its program. Where does that stem from? The NCAA ruled correctly on denying Gil a 6th year. It was a "hey, the worst they can do is say no, right?" flyer that had almost no chance of succeeding, and Jim knew it from the start. As for Tomasevic, I have no problem with her time at UW. But if we're really going to compare - one player entered college as an 18 year kid and missed two years of competition due to major injuries. Gysin is the poster girl for why the 6th year exception exists. The other player entered college at 22 with extensive experience at a pro club, and played four consecutive seasons (after getting NCAA dispensation to come back her senior year). Not what you would call apples to apples. I didn't say it was apples to apples, SOME USC posters were ragging on Tomasevic for her age, however Gysin was up there in age too, that was my only point. I'm glad both got to play. As for the experience Tomasevic got, I bring up old points on the matter. Absolutely nothing stops the U.S. college players from playing high level international volleyball. Tom was an Olympian playing at the highest levels of the sport at age 19, should that then disqualify her from playing at Stanford?

No, I don't really tend to get bothered by the past, what's the point? nothing you can really do about it. I wasn't the one bringing up Tomasevic in the first place.

SOME Washington posters can't handle the fact that you had a 25-year-old on your roster for your lone national championship. There is a huge difference between being a 19-year-old and being a 25-year-old.

Gysin wasn't close to as old as Tomasevic was for her last season. And there is something stopping U.S. college players from playing high level international volleyball. That Tomasevic was able to spend 3 years playing professional volleyball after the war ended before she moseyed on over to Seattle, and still be ruled eligible because "war" (we guess???) just shows how arbitrary the NCAA can be and how unfair it was to programs that were actually recruiting by the rules.

If she was so great, how come she never played for her national team? Tomasevic hit .206, with 10 kills against Nebraska. It was UW's defense that decided the match, shutting down Houghtelling (.079), Elmer (.087), and Larson (-.200). (It wasn't Tomasevic's blocking - she had 3 ba's.) UW had five players with 9 or more digs - Nebraska had three. UW won the first set, despite hitting just .087 - Nebraska hit .083, which rattled them. Washington 3, Nebraska 0 Box Score - National ChampionshipThere have been lots of 25- and 26-year olds that played college football after America's wars. What's fair for the guys is fair for the girls.

Most starting college volley players are in their early 20's. She led by 10 kills: Tomasevic 477, Morrison 467, Haggerty 378. They ran a balanced offense (unlike many USC teams), which wasn't dependent on any one player. If Morrison hadn't banged up her knee, she likely would have topped the kill count. Tomasevic helped, but her age was not a big factor: 2005 (4.50k/s), 2004 (4.70k/s), 2003 (5.29k/s). There was a list of players other than Tomasevic who made close to equal contributions: Thompson, Morrison, Haggerty, Deesing, Myhre, and Lee. Nobody gave them a chance against Nebraska. They blitzed them. How did USC do against them: 0-3, .062 (Seattle) 0-3, .083 (Los Angeles) Defensive team effort...

Ugh, I hate all the arguing between USC and UW fans, including redbeard's gloating statistics (yes, Washington has done quite well against USC for a while now. We get it).
I wish all you guys would just PM each other or block each other and stop ruining threads.

Hey, I want to be able to get to 15,000 posts and ruin threads just like UW people...so how many titles have the Huskies won without a 25-year-old on the team? :::crickets chirping:::

The statistics weren't to gloat (it was over ten years ago, after all), but merely to show that UW's championship was not due to a single player (Tomasevic), but to a balanced team effort, on offense and defense.
