My question is will either Ford or Lanier play six rotations next year. Why not both? In a perfect world, both would play 6 so the bic is available all the time. However, I think it depends on how much Ford improves in the off season with serve rec and defense. She hits the bic quite well already.

I saw a video of Lanier winning the Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year and she seems incredibly sweet and humble. Can't wait to see how she develops at USC! My question is will either Ford or Lanier play six rotations next year. It won't be Kahlia. Three rotations across the front will be what she can give Trojan teammates, coachea and supporters.

there will be no future for USC until we can get this thread to 412 pages like Stanford....

Abercrombie will play 6. That might make the most sense for passing. Or will Mick opt for some more firepower out of the back?

Been a long time since Mick has done that. 2012 with Crone in the 5-1 isn't that long ago. And he ran it for a long time consecutively before that (3 years of Bateman, 3 for Carico, I forget previously)

Abercrombie will play 6. When did Abercrobie become a college level passer and defender? I don't recall seeing those skills at the HS or club level. And based on what we've seen this year she's not particulary adept hitting off the net, so I'm wondering why Abercrombie? Lanier has had a passing role to this point, and imo is a superior passer to Ford at this same stage. Bricio was not a great backrow player as a freshman or sophomore, but Mick needed her backrow attack. Ditto Lanier.

She's done well in the back when they've switched to the 5-1 this year, and she has a really good serve. She probably won't be passing.

But as he indicated in his post Kansas match interview, identifying leadership is a top priority each year. He said leadership on the floor is essential to success. Johnson looks the type, but others have to step up. This emphasis makes expanding Abercrombie's role unlikely imo. If she serves, she'll be off after.

Abercrombie expanding her role doesn't take away from the ability of Johnson or seniors Whittinham and Ruddins to step up and lead. With Ford and Lanier on the left, Mick will want a DS on the floor at all times for passing. Subbing the opp would leave them without enough ball handling for at least one rotation, maybe more.

I was trying not to be overly specific or harsh toward a 20 year old. I think another rotation solution will win out.

For their non-conference schedule, have them play one match against Ohio St in Columbus. Next year's championship is there, show them the arena, put that goal in their minds now and play a probably top 15 team in OSU, who undoubtedly will be shooting to make the FF. For everyone's planning - 2016 FF at Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus, home of the BlueJackets. OSU Volleyball home is venerable St. John's Arena on OSU Campus.

As others have mentioned, Lanier is further along in her development as a passer than Ford is. I would expect her to get the nod at 6 rotations first. I'm guessing Mick left Abercrombie in back row in the 5-1 since the SC middles were never going behind the setter so having a bailout back row attacker over there makes sense. Plus it is easier to hide a right back defender than middle back.

Setting was really USC's downfall this year. If they had a great setter, running the offense with consistency they would probably have won the NC. But why would this hypothetical setter want to set for Coach Haley? He has a well-deserved reputation of running off setters at both the college and national team level. Former USC head coach Chuck Erbe mellowed as he aged. Since Coach Haley did drastically change his offense, perhaps he is more open to change in other ways these days.
