I thought Holcomb was a walk on. She signed a Nat'l Letter of Intent (i.e., LOI or NLI) to come to Penn State, which means she's getting a scholarship. Unfortunately, Penn State doesn't officially publish scholarship info, so social media is the main source of this info. If someone is a walk-on or doesn't get a scholarship then they do not need to sign a LOI.

Volleyball is a head count sport, meaning if you receive any athletic scholarship money -- full or partial -- you count as one of the 12 permitted scholarships.

I was not sure about that, but just checked and sure enough women's VB scholarships are awarded by head count vs equivalency (i.e., partial awards can be given to reach the 4.5 limit) for the men's side. So, I'm assuming then that PSU awards 12 full scholarships, I'm sure they have the resources to afford that. I'd be curious to find out the motivation for having different rules for the genders.

I'm sure the rules are revenue-driven. Hugh McCutcheon didn't decide to coach women's volleyball solely due to liking spandex.

No letter of intent needed to be signed in your HS senior year when you get a scholarship in your soph, junior or senior year or a combination.

Just to be clear, you're referring to college students who come as a walk-on and are later awarded a scholarship for the remainder of their stay?

A scholarship may or may not be "promised/discussed" at some point in their career. It's just another way to help those ds or back up setters.

Sounds like a good way to work around the equivalency rule (i.e., partial awards given per year per player instead of several players in one year). Teams can work the head count limitation to stagger their rosters and still give partial incentives to incoming talent.

Things have been pretty quiet on the Penn State front this offseason. I think it's partly due to me not being on(lol) and the other part penn state being more in a rebuild mode. I've come to finally accept psu can't be on top every year. It's been such a long run sometimes I expect too much and not appreciate what they have been able to do. Nobody stays on top forever.
Now, on to this next season for PSU. In my opinion it's going to be a down season for psu while they work things out. My hope is that they can figure out something that works so that when that big junior class is seniors, they can make one more strong run. They lost two big attackers last year in Courtney and Whitney. Who's going to step up and help make up for that loss? Is it going to be someone from bench or could they get a big transfer? The OH won't matter though unless they clean up the setting and Libero play. Keeton seems like a cool person but don't think she's the answer back there for Penn State. I really think white will come in and take that position. I hope white becomes as good as people think she can be. Watched some of her video and reminds me of Gonzalez some. She seems to have a very strong personality like a leader. Need to have someone in back helping direct traffic. They looked like a mess last year. I've never seen so many balls drop and so many players running into eachother. That just can't happen
Then theirs the setting position. It has to be a lot better then it was last year. I'm not exactly sure if it's a skill problem or just getting to start last year and adjusting. Way to many balls set so far off net and decision making not great. People may disagree but I'm still of the thought that weiskirchers position isn't necessarily a lock. I want to see what demure can do. They just need to find a way to get by till gabby blossom gets there in 2018. 2018 is looking to be a strong class. Really would like one more title with this junior class. They won't really been losing anyone after this year. Nobody from this years senior class has ever started and I don't think it's gonna start this year. So if the juniors along with maybe whichever sophomores and freshman find their way into starting lineup can find cohesiveness this year they can be in strong position to push next year. Nebraska and wisky both lose some big players after this year. In my opinion, frantii and Washington are only locks this year. I truely believe white will take Libero position though.
So those are just my thoughts and opinions. What's everyone else think?

I'm thinking why did you need to start a new thread? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?? You just were too lazy to look, or didn't want to post in the "Penn St. in 2016" thread created in mid December so you could start your own thread! LOL

Didn't know there was thread. Didn't see any psu talk in a long while.

I think it is going to be another tough year (for PSU standards). I think somewhere between #3 - #5 in B1G, and 5-12 nationally, but need a couple people to really step up or gat an impact transfer to be in the NC hunt.
Will the passing improve even with loss of Courtney? Will setting improve if passing is better? Will Simone Lee be consistent this year? Has Reed improved her vb skills to go along with her incredible athleticism so she can see the court? Will Frantti have a bounce back year?
