LMU lost its other top 4 players via graduation. Makes sense that Sponcil sits out this year. Not sure who is coming up through the ranks this year that can play #1 with Sarah next year. Maybe John Mayer will be able to recruit that player. LMU is a great school to be at, but it is private and has no football team to help support the other sports financially. The idea is to redshirt Sponcil this season in order to give her three seasons playing with Savannah Slattery, a '16 recruit.

Get a free year of graduate work in without having to transfer.

After sitting out this year she should move inland to USC where she will have a chance to be an NCAA champion. Without a pairs competition LMU and most other smaller schools will have little chance to make it to the championship tourney.
Without a pairs event this year it had to make it easier for her to pass on this season even though she is arguably the best or one of the top 3 players in the collegiate beach nation, imho.

If she wants to play both beach and indoor, which it seems she does, Southern Cal is not an option.

Schools that continue to rely on their indoor team to make up the majority of their roster will continue to struggle on the beach. Although they are competitive when it comes down to spiking and serving, not developing the instincts during summer play and beach tournaments really affects one's ability to bump set, make shots and read defensively. Nor are the indoor players typically required (or desire) to play beach in the summer. Schools that are now relying on only a third of the indoor team (or less)for their roster are really starting to move away of the rest. USC is the best example.

Mick has a standing offer out to at least one beach player across Figueroa and I'm sure Sponcil would have the same. So the issue is not cast in stone, at least more recently.

USC isn't the only school where she will have a chance at a championship. UCLA will be very good, and Pepperdine and Hawaii will always be strong as well.

Long Beach State seems to be one of the best beach teams left that relies on the indoor team for most of its players.

I love the way Sarah Sponcil plays, but 5-10 OH's are not in very high demand amongst upper-end Pac-12 teams. LMU is really a perfect fit for her.

Sponcil was originally recruited as a setter by LMU. She was put into the OH position based on her pre-season play, LMU still had Tedrow to set, and out of necessity. She would go back to setting for Mick if she came to USC.
