Incoming freshmen include the future "beast," Gia Milana. Katie Myers should start immediately.
Not much competition for the pins or middles as Milana will replace All-American Adreene Elliott and Twilley is returning. As are Murray and MacGregor.
Other competitions- setter. It should be interesting to see if Craigo can retain that setting position or the freshman coming in, Smith, will replace her.
Could the Terps run a 6-2 with Criago/Smith and have Gaskin/Meyers on the right side?
Players to watch: Wicinski. Interested to see her progression within the next year. What does the DS position look like for maryland?
Overview: The Terps should definitely climb to becoming a bubble team this year depending on non-conference scheduling and how well they can beat the teams they're supposed to (rutgers)...

Wow, someone started a thread about Maryland?! Then again a star like Milana will attract a lot of excitement.

A Bubble team !? You have to contend with National Champions in Nebraska, Penn St,Wisconsin,Minnesota,Michigan,Michigan St, Purdue,Ohio St,Illinois.
If they can beat Rutgers,Iowa,Indiana and Northwestern it's a start. Let's be serious here with this !!!

That right there is 8 wins (assuming they play twice)! If they beat them last year and the win over Ohio State, that's 9 B1G, tying Michigan. Don't forget, UM was 20-13 (9-11) last year (with the win over PSU, granted). The Terps were 15-19, only two losses flipped to wins and that would be 17-17... If they could manage a better non-con next year with the wins they got from it this year, a bubble team isn't out of the realm of possibility considering that if a few things went the other way the Terps could have been this year. However, playing teams like Morgan State, Penn, and Western Carolina don't help. In a crazy world, let's not forget that Iowa was ranked in the Top 25 and look what happened with them

Anecdotal story. Top kid recruited by Maryland and her dad outside locker room between game 2&3. Coach was furious. Asked the kid and parent to wait outside. He yelled and screamed profanities that would make a sailor blush. The dad told me they left that evening (a day early) and headed down to DC to make an unscheduled visit the next day. I asked him "did they win?" His answer "I think so but at what cost?" I have heard (from college coaches) that many (most) of the top coaches can be abusive in the locker room and at practice. I am a Bball junkie. Go to as many NCAA practices as I can. Most of the top 10. 80% of those coaches curse a blue storm. Not sure I have a point. I have no dog in the Big 10/Maryland on the rise or not hunt. Just wondering if anyone reading this has heard the guy is someone they want their kid playing for or not? There is a lot riding on these games and if the girls are not putting in the effort it takes, they are going to be held accountable! Swearing doesn't mean lack of caring or abuse - it's just a way to get the girls attention. IMHO. These girls are given A LOT and A LOT is expected in return. I would trust Coach Steve with any player in the country and would guarantee he will get the most out of them! Do I like someone swearing at young ladies....NO, but I understand that at times it is just a means to an end.

I find this VERY difficult to believe unless the 'Maryland' school referred to was NOT where Aird coaches. He is one of the most passionate but laid back coaches I have seen. 'Screaming profanities' just isn't his style. (P.s. Especially considering he knew going in what he had and what the realities were. He knows it's a process in both development & recruiting. Not only is screaming profanities not his style, screaming profanities to a group of kids making Big 10 volleyball adjustments REALLY isn't his style.)

The dad who told me this is a straight shooter, exec type, and it was definately the Big 10 terps...I dont even know the name of the coach, but he said that he came from PSU...not sure if that fits, and as I told him, perhaps it was a once in a blue moon thing, but even if not, that most of the top 10 coaches in womens and mens basketball all use colorful language...this includes one of my best friends at a top 10 school, great guy, goes to church, but in practice he can let a few things fly that he would not want my daughter to hear Well, there are 2 coaches on staff from PSU, neither of which this story fits well (again, especially Aird) yes, even the coolest/calmest coaches can lose it once in awhile. Given the coach asked the player & parent to step outside, maybe it was a calculated move to wake the team up because truly...NOT Aird's style. I still question the validity/details of the story but even if true...no player should question playing for him. He's a great coach.

Aird's style is not one of degrading and yelling. If he did so in that situation, it was calculated and not the norm!!

If they could manage a better non-con next year with the wins they got from it this year, a bubble team isn't out of the realm of possibility considering that if a few things went the other way the Terps could have been this year. However, playing teams like Morgan State, Penn, and Western Carolina don't help. In a crazy world, let's not forget that Iowa was ranked in the Top 25 and look what happened with them :P They scheduled those teams because they weren't good. Penn (who you mention as a team that they need to schedule better than) took them 5. Navy had a losing record in the Patriot league and took them 5. George Washington finished 4th in the Atlantic 10 and beat them. I think they're a long way from the bubble, but it will be interesting to see how Aird schedules this year.

I wouldn't say "a long way from the bubble"...they are going to be a lot closer than people think. Milana and Meyers are just 2 of the players they are bringing in. The other two, Taylor Smith (setter) and Nell Drummey (Libero/DS) are also going to be able to contribute as well. Not to mention a few more that are coming in with those 4 to add some depth. If Meyers can recover from her knee surgery, they are going to be much closer to a bubble team than you think! IMHO

Don't forget, they had some early injuries that had a LOT to do with those loses as well. Two senior starters went out for the season. If everyone stays healthy and Meyers can play, they could turn it around quickly!

Love to see your kid with Cook or Rose...If Aird goes off like that I can't imagine what level you'd consider those two. Also, remind me when a recruit has ever been in the locker room, in any sport, during or right after the match has ended?
