You know, I've never been to this campus. Where is it? Mill Valley?
Also, is the Mary in Saint Mary referring to Mary Mother of God, or Mary of Magdalene? Is the latter a saint?

As said before, it's in Moraga. Moraga is a few miles from any freeway. The main ways in are either by taking Highway 24 to Orinda, then via Moraga Way, or alternately taking Pinehurst Road from of Oakland. The school is run by the Brothers of the Christian Schools (AKA The Christian Brothers). And yes, it named after Mary, Mother of God. It has a fairly compact campus. www.stmarys-ca.edu

Oh, there you go again Wolfie, with your off-topic musings. It's in very hilly rural surroundings and, assuming your joints are okay, a nice place to jog while adding to your geohistorical knowledge.

What an off-the-wall rediculous post from someone so many people looked up to for constructive comments on the college scene. How disappointing. Maybe you should spend more time on human rather than dog relationships. I understand Wolfgang's style and his comments and tone in this thread don't particularlarly annoy me. I take him at his word that he didn't know where St Mary's College is. I grew up less than 12 miles from the SMC campus, but I'd only heard passing references to it while in HS. That SMC really existed only registered for me when their men's basketball team did well in 1989. Heck - the first time I'd ever heard of Santa Clara University was late in HS when I went to take their annual math test, and I ended up with a degree from there. As for the St Mary's VB program, they didn't look that great to me when i saw them face Cal last season, although they did manage to make game 3 close (I think Cal let up). They played with a lot of energy, and they had a busload of fans coming into Berkeley. However - their current team now has the momentum of a freight train, and Jon Stevenson has them believing that they can beat anyone on a given night. With the newfound success, they are finding good fan support, and I really hope they can find some way to keep Coach Stevenson on board. I'm sure that some schools in higher profile conferences may be looking to steal him away from SMC.

I know this is a little bit of a down year for Stanford, relatively speaking, but this may be the best shape all the various Bay Area college teams have been in in some time.
1)St. Mary's, Cal, Santa Clara, may be better the last couple years than they've ever been.
2) Stanford will likely be just fine if not later this year, by next year. San Jose State is 11-6. USF improved a lot last year and is 9-11 this year which is better than where they were.
Wasn't that long ago when there was Stanford then all the other Bay ARea volleyball programs

Well - I take it that the schools must be named after the Virgin Mary. Their chapel is dedicated to her: www.stmarys-ca.edu/about/mission_history/history_chapelHistory of the Chapel
Taken from A Guide to the History of the Saint Mary's College Campus, by Br. L. Raphael. Moraga, 2000.
Dedicated in 1928 to "Mary, of whom was born Jesus", the chapel is indeed the focal point of the campus in several respects. Originally, in 1863, Archbishop Alemany named the college (as well as Saint Mary's Hospital and his cathedral) for Mary under her title the Immaculate Conception, a dogma proclaimed in 1854.** ** ** It's a small campus built into a hillside. It's slightly larger than Santa Clara University, although its buildings are more spread out. The main gym (Mckeon Pavilion) has a large high-school gym feel to it, with seating just over 3000. The seating is mainly retractable wooden benches, and the secondary basketball backboards are pulled back directly over the seating areas. For volleyball, they don't allow seating on the west side, and pull back the seats. At the North end, there's a balcony with several cushioned stadium style seats hanging just over the wall. The North wall is about 5 feet from the basketball baseline, so I would suppose a lot of action might be hard to see right in that area (there is a see-through glass barrier though). What I found a bit hard to figure is that with the wooden benches retracted on both sides, they've laid out two more volleyball courts (with about 3 feet separation) parallel to the main court. They left the (white tape) lines for the secondary courts in when I went to see Pepperdine play there; the main court is laid out in the same white tape. I get the feeling that it might be possible for someone quickly looking down to confuse which lines belong to the main court and which lines belong to the secondary courts.

Don't intend to jump too far off topic, but I'd seen the school names in this conference for a long time and never gave much thought to who or what they were named for.
1) Santa Clara=Clara de Asis though college is named for the mission.
2) USF= St. Francis of Assisi?
3) Loyola Marymount= Ignatius Loyola
4) USD= San Diego De Alcala, college is likely named more for the city
5) Portland seems to be a Catholic school not named for a saint like Boston College.
6) Gonzaga , there really is a Saint Gonzaga
7) Pepperdine, named for George Pepperdine who founded Western Auto, Church of Christ affiliated, only non-Catholic school in the conference.

I'll throw in a VB comment here an there to keep it on-topic. 1) Santa Clara=Clara de Asis though college is named for the mission.I own a home in Santa Clara. There's a big statue of St Claire of Asis in a park on El Camino Real. 2) USF= St. Francis of Assisi?Definitely named after the city. Nowhere near any Spanish missions. BTW - what's up with their VB team? Last season they were tearing it up early in the season. Now they've lost some key players and seem to be rebuilding again.

Oh, there you go again Wolfie, with your off-topic musings. It's in very hilly rural surroundings and, assuming your joints are okay, a nice place to jog while adding to your geohistorical knowledge. Ha! I already read your original post where you practically stuck me with a skewer and kebab'ed me over an open fire. I don't mind the rage. And, no one should ever look up to me for volleyball musings. I lost interest in the sport back in 2002. I just come to this forum because of an addiction. See, posting about volleyball or other topics is not the same thing as liking/loving the sport of volleyball. Honestly, I could not watch an entire game between two mediocre teams.

I don't mind the rage. Honestly, I could not watch an entire game between two mediocre teams. "Rage, rage against the burning of the light. Do not go gentle into the good night." If you happen to have a child who decides to play VB, I have a feeling you will indeed watch an entire match, let alone a game, between two mediocre teams, and not just once!
