www.gophersports.com/sports/game_stats.asp?event_id=5334&sport_id=wvollWhere's the report? Can't a guy play Wednesday night VB and then watch a little of the debate and leave it to others? Gorf! 341 fans pack Carver Hawkeye to watch this bout. Check out Jessy Jones's night. And the Bratford/Martin combo. Glad they took care of business. Pablo hates anything less.

My mother was born in Minnesota. My cousin is a top judge/justice there. I grew up in Iowa. So I learned Iowa sports. Male: Football and wrestling. (Cf John Irving) Female: One of the first states to have high school basketball. My next door neighbor was the football coach who took the Hawkeyes to the Rose Bowl for the first time since whenever, and was awarded a finned Eldorado as a result. These days, m-0-n-e-y. Volleyball? Nada, except in PE classes, where I, the shortest and most immature of all classmates, was the roving, attacking libero (without rules constraints) and the only one in my class to get an A. Oh, the forget it. So, while Iowa has turned out some fine VB players and teams since then, sadly, the sport has never taken off. (Ed.note: has it anywhere else?) But always a soft spot for Minnesota and Iowa teams.

Just got back a while ago (okay... 45 minutes ago). Long road trip, for a (thankfully) short match.
Gophers started out very shaky. Marci P said after the match that it was hard to judge where the ball was going, which is a complaint I've heard before about Carver-Hawkeye -- something about the size of the arena, I guess.
Jessy looked good, but realistically, no Gopher was really challenged much by the opponents. I'm glad she got another opportunity to get experience in the Big10. Jess and Mere didn't have great matches, but fortunately, it was okay for them to have an off night.
I counted about 200 fans shortly before game 3 started.

Jones had good stats this match, no doubt. But I'm betting that as the level of competition goes back up from abysmal (Iowa), Jones disappears off the box score again. I wonder why Herbert didn't redshirt her? They don't need her this year, and she's still in need of mucho seasoning to make any meaningful contribution. It makes you wonder why they blow a year of her eligibility to ride the pines. She could have gotten all the experience and reps she needed, did he really need an extra clipboard holder?

(Cf John Irving) Female: One of the first states to have high school basketball. LOL! Good old 6 on 6. (to be honest, though, I prefered 6 on 6 girls basketball to 5 on 5; you had to love players like Lynn Lorenzen averaging 60 points a game) You lived next door to Hayden Fry? When I was in high school, fall softball was more common throughout the state, although there was some volleyball. At least now, most schools have volleyball teams. So I would tend to disagree a little, and argue that volleyball has certainly grown in the state. I've made the argument before though that it is hard to grow volleyball a lot in places where there is not a history. For one, where are you going to find coaches? It's hard to teach volleyball if you don't have anyone around who knows it. I still consider volleyball in that area to be in its infancy. As more people get involved, it will continue to get better. Very clearly, the average volleyball player in Iowa is a lot better now than they were 20 years ago, and the best players are better as well. When I was in high school, Bobbi Becker (now UNI coach Petersen) was hands down the best player in the state, but she will tell you that compared to high school players nowadays, she wasn't that great (she came out of high school with a 12" vertical). Of course, you have to be careful because she is extremely modest (it runs in her family, they are all like that)

341 fans pack Carver Hawkeye to watch this bout. Wow, the big crowd came out to see the Gophs. Must be that inter-state rivalry thing.

The stats would be even more skewed in the Gophers favor if you took out the really slow start. I was wondering if the arena was causing some of the early problems. I'd be curious to hear whether they thought the arena also had an impact on their 10 service errors. The Hawkeyes were up like 3-1 early and continued up through 13-8 before the Gophers started to come alive and pretty much dominate the rest of the match. The Gophers had 10 hitting errors in the first game with the Hawkeyes having only one block at the time.

From what I can recall (which isn't a lot at times) Dr. Mike hasn't really been one to redshirt frosh players that aren't injured, recovering from injuries, or had academic eligibility issues. Jessy's stats last night were look even better when you consider that she played only about a game and a half. She will probably continue to get more playing time against the Big 10's weaker teams and I wouldn't be surprised to see her getting some playing time in other matches as the conference season progresses or even in the tournament. Its nice to have a bit of developing depth at middle from a young player that isn't given a baptism of fire (so to speak) as both Jess Byrnes and Meredith Nelson both had in their freshman seasons.

I wonder why Herbert didn't redshirt her? Just guessing here, but maybe because "Herbert" doesn't coach this team, whoever "Herbert" is. ;D Don't know. I hated to see Kelly Bowman ride the bench last year, too. But, then again, the Gophers didn't have a backup setter. This year, they don't have all that much depth at OH (including opposite). Maybe they want Jones to be ready should they need her as a middle or an opposite? They are also already redshirting Dee Jackson. Anyhow. I've learned to trust "Herbert" and his decisions. Gorf is the one always second-guessing him and bad-mouthing his substitution patterns. It's kinda embarrassing when he stands up and yells at the Gopher bench, "Herbert! What the hellll are you doing? You've only got 12 subs, not 120!" I'm thinking about changing seats...

Wed nights are tough nights for vball, because many of the high schools play that night, so cannot get out to a game. Volleyball in Iowa is growing quickly, thanks in large part to club. " Two years Iowa had a 16-U Club team finish 3rd at Nats in Atlanta, and took I think 9th this year. In high school here, last year volleyball passed basketball for the number one particpated sport for females, and should become number 1 in attendance for female sports as well.

I'm thinking about changing seats... Probably not a bad idea. I've heard that Mike no longer sees the humor in calling security to have you removed from the middle of the opposing team's side of the court before each home match. At least you stood up and removed your hat for the national anthem before the match against Wisconsin.

At least you stood up and removed your hat for the national anthem before the match against Wisconsin. Sure. But that still didn't stop you from dropping your pants. It's unpatriotic, Gorf. Not to mention nauseating, aesthetically.

Just guessing here, but maybe because "Herbert" doesn't coach this team, whoever "Herbert" is. ;D Don Herbert. AKA Mr. Wizard. (I once called Don Herbert to invite him to give a lecture when I was at UNI. He respectfully declined, but it was a thrill to talk to Mr. Wizard, my second favorite scientist of all time (behind the Professor, of course))

C'mon (R)uffda, give a rookie a break. Herbert or Hebert, you know who I was talking about. Actually, I'm glad you stopped focusing on the minutia and actually replied to my statement.
Also, I forgot he already has a redshirt. If Minnesota's depth is as thin as you claim, it wouldn't make sense to stuff the cupboard with too much talent.
I agree that Jessy has great upside, it's just that after watching a whole slew of her classmates step in and excell (Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue and Michigan), she looks far behind these girls in terms of development. Not burning a year of her eligibility while she smoothed out her skills might have been better for the Gophers in later years.
