No. 8 Women's Volleyball Defeats Michigan State, 3-0, Buckeyes Now 17-0
Buckeye Stacey Gordon has match-high 28 points with Danielle Meyer adding 12.5
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The eighth-ranked Ohio State (17-0 overall, 7-0 Big Ten) women's volleyball team, behind 28 points from Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) and 12.5 from Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) defeated Michigan State (6-9, 1-6), 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-26) Friday night in St. John Arena. Gordon had a match-high 25 kills, with two ace serves and a solo block for her points. Meyer contributed 11 kills, a solo block and an assist block. Michigan State's Kim Schram had a team-high 16.5 points with 14 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and one assist block. Meghan Schoen added 12.5 points with eight kills, an ace serve, two solo blocks and three assist blocks.
Tied at six in game one, a Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) kill and two ace serves from Gordon gave Ohio State a 9-6 lead. An OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to 13-11, but kills by Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Gordon made it 15-11. Michigan State's Brooke Langston made it 15-12 with a solo block but OSU countered with a Meyer kill, a Mapp-McCarthy block and a Gordon kill to open an 18-12 lead. The Spartans cut the lead to three at 22-19 and with a Diana Steplyk kill and a Schoen ace serve trailed, 22-21. Kills by Meyer and MSU's Maggie Griffin made hit 23-22. A Meyer kill and a Spartan error made it 25-22. A Langston kill was countered by a Gordon kill to move the score to 26-23. Steplyk, with a kill made it 26-24. A kill by Michelle Kopka cut the OSU lead to one at 26-25. Gordon and Mapp responded with kills to open a 28-25 lead. Schoen's kill cut the margin to 28-26. A Gordon kill set game point at 29-26 and a Spartan error ended the game at 30-26. Ohio State hit .366 for the game to .275 for Michigan State.
Game two started with the teams exchanging points to 10-10. An OSU error and an ace serve by Tracey Bellwood made it 12-10, Michigan State. Two kills from Gordon tied the game at 12 and a Spartan error and an ace serve from Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) put OSU ahead, 14-12. A Langston kill and a Kopka-Schoen block tied the game at 14. Kills by Main and Meyer and two MSU error made it 18-14, Ohio State. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to seven at 25-18 before an OSU error and a Langston kill cut the margin to 25-20. A kill and a solo block by Gordon made it 27-20. Rebecca Kastein's (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) ace serve made it 28-20. A Buckeye error and a block by Langston and Kopka made it 28-22. A Spartan error set game point at 29-22. Kopka's kill cut the lead to 29-23 before Mapp's kill closed the game at 30-23. The Buckeyes hit .268 to .097 for the Spartans.

Ohio State took an 8-6 lead but Michigan State tied the game at eight. Tied at 17, two Gordon kills, an ace serve from Brittany Dahms (Fr., Byron, Ill.) and a Spartan error put the Buckeyes ahead, 21-17. Michigan State closed to within one at 22-21 with four Buckeye errors. With Ohio State leading, 25-24, kills by Mapp and Gordon gave Ohio State a 27-24 lead. Schoen countered with a kill at 27-25. Gordon responded with an kill at 28-25. Schram's kill made it 28-26, OSU. Gordon's 25th kill of the match and 10th of the game set game and match point at 29-26. OSU won the game at 30-26 with a Spartan hitting error, winning the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .351 for the game to .243 for Michigan State.
For the match, Ohio State hit .328 to Michigan State's .213. The Buckeyes had a 57-42 margin in kills and a 4-3 advantage in ace serves. Ohio State gave up nine service error to eight for the Spartans. Defensively, Ohio State had a 42-35 margin in digs with OSU's Dahms recording a match-high 11. At the net, Michigan State had a 10-5 advantage in team blocks. MSU's Schoen had a match-high five blocks with two solos and three assist. At setter, OSU's Main collected 49 assists in the match to MSU's Griffin who had 38.
Ohio State continues at home Saturday when they host Michigan (14-4, 4-3) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. The Wolverines lost 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-14) Friday night at No. 5 Penn State (15-1, 6-1).
