One Qualification match across both genders folks, that's what we're working with. The women's field isn't even a full 32, so we'll have some byes in pool play. That is of course, if there are any late teams added at last minute. So, the FIVB is back in Brazil for the 4th time already this year and it's not even May. As always, I've got live searchable scores up on the site: volleyballsource.net/news/2016/4/26/beach-fortaleza-open-2016Live streams will be posted when they become available, and YouTube links will be added in for semis.

Thanks much, Camkerr - I see the two Canadian men's teams, but nary a Canuck among the women - how come? Anyone know why so few teams in general? First time I can remember seeing so many byes in pool play on the women's side, and I counted 5 US teams on that side versus only Gibb/Patterson among the men? I know about Zika and the fact that it is only an Open, but what is up with the incredibly low turnout?

Whats the protocol for late entries? Are they possible? It seems like if many of the lower US teams knew qualification would be so easy they would have jumped at the chance.
Marcio retiring. Lot of changing of the guard in Brazil, Ricardo seems like the next candidate.

I know about Zika and the fact that it is only an Open, but what is up with the incredibly low turnout? Ya, no Canadian teams on the women's side and overall very low turnout. I think it's just plain ol' points & money reasons. It costs a lot for teams to go to Brazil, so it's gotta be worth it. Teams who are all but qualified for Rio will pass. Zika has nothing to do with it, they didn't care about that with the Rio GS earlier. Whats the protocol for late entries? Are they possible? It seems like if many of the lower US teams knew qualification would be so easy they would have jumped at the chance. Marcio retiring. Lot of changing of the guard in Brazil, Ricardo seems like the next candidate. It's complicated but you can have late entries with a fee penalty and after those are exhausted, you can have even later entries after that. I know in Long Beach last year, there were a lot of US teams who took advantage of the late entry. I was in the Main Draw player's meeting for LB last year and some players were pissed that so many USA teams got into the tournament that way because if gave the impression that they bypassed country quota.

Match 39: Lane Carico / Summer Ross United States (13) def. Juliana Felisberta / Taiana Lima Brazil (4) 21-16, 21-16 (0:37)
Very good win for them!

That bracket opened up in a hurry. Best chance Gibb/Patterson will get to win one in a while. No top teams left in the tournament.

Its hard to tell because BVB info is being weird, but it looks like that game mattered for getting the bye. If so that is a great win. Following up a good tournament last week with this could mean they are finally on the right track. Good for them

Nice win for Jake and Casey, though I like Guto and Saymon's volleyball much more.

Whats going on with the Brazilian woman? First Juliana loses to Lane/Summer, now Agatha and Barbara to Dowdy/Stockman?

Whats going on with the Brazilian woman? First Juliana loses to Lane/Summer, now Agatha and Barbara to Dowdy/Stockman? I've heard it's a super windy beach. Wind can make for some weird results. That said, I like Dowdy's game and wouldn't be surprised to see her in the mix the next Olympic cycle.

Thanks for the replies, Camkerr! Agreed, Crawfish - I remember thinking that Dowdy had a really long way to go when she was playing with Branagh a few years ago, but I was really impressed with her conditioning and her overall improvement while watching her and Stockman down in New Orleans. Plus, they really played well with that brutal Lake Ponchartrain wind, so I am glad to see them do well in Brazil (even though I see they just got knocked out in the round of 8).

That Brazilian team they lost to won earlier this year and has beat some real teams this year. Looking forward to seeing Lisboa play in the gold medal match. Has the future of Brazilian's women already arrived? I wonder what the comparative benefits of playing college, like Claes/Hughes, and jumping right in like Lisboa. My first inclination is to go FIVB as soon as you can, but Xinya plus a lot of women in other sports (thinking mostly tennis here) would possibley say otherwise Jake/Casey just don't seem to have it anymore. Would love a Sinjin type olympic run from Jake though.
