Who will be FOY candidates this upcoming season?
Kim Glass, Arizona won the honor in 2002.
Redshirt Freshmen are ineligible for this award.
Who do you think has a chance? Make your nominations here so we know who to look for.
- Kristen Richards, Stanford - Amber McCray, Florida - anyone from Long Beach State? - someone from UCLA? - Kristina Baum or Enobong Ibok, Arizona?
Throw the names out here. It will be an interesting mix of the team being good, and the player filling in a vital role.

I think Kanoe will lead the Wahine to the National Championship and destroy the competition!

Minnesota has 3 incoming recruits.
Kelly Bowman and Meredith Nelson were both highly thought of coming out of high school so they could be potential FOY candidates.
The 3rd, Marci Peniata, I've been told could be as good on defense and serve receive as Paula Gentil. If she can actually live up to that it will be huge for the Gophers since the only player they lost from last year's team was Lisa Axel (their other primary player on serve receive and defense.)
Is it possible for a DS to win the POY award? Has a walk-on ever won the POY award?
Regardless of whether any of those 3 makes a serious run at the POY award, I'm pretty excited about Minnesota's 2003 recruiting class.

I think if the Wahine are to go as far as expected, Kanoe will have a good chance at getting the award and I'm also going on Kristin Richards as well if she is able to produce like how everyone is saying she should.
And I didn't know that redshirt freshman weren't eligible for freshman of the year. Has that always been a rule or was that recently changed with the rest of the rule changes.

Alicia Arnott's father once mistook me for Kristen Richard's mother. I guess KR and I look alike. I am curious to see how much she'll play for Stanford her Freshman year. I have never seen her play.
Mariko Crum at Long Beach State may help them out. She's pretty good and I think "what's his name" may need to play some of the Frosh this year.

Hey H20, Lauren Miramontes??? Hmmmmmmm! I don't think so. Better talent in Long Beach's freshman class, that's for sure, and I would not tout any of them as FOY candidates(yet)!

So, um... are you going to wait until they are seniors to tout them as candidates? Seriously, the point of this thread was to draw out the incoming freshman candidates so we know who to watch... right now, I don't know who to watch at LBSU... care to fill us in on potential?

caley and kanoe will run a 6-2 and both will be named co player of the years I think that is a little bit too much to ask from them right now, or were you mistaken and meant co-freshmen of the year. Because I think that it will be highly unlikely for them to win player of the year with Kim Willoughby and all the girls from USC supplying the offense.

Come to think of it a 6-2 might work out.
Last year, I have no idea what posessed them to do that. It seemed to work, but logically it was like getting all the problems with none of the benefits. The hitters had to adjust to 2 setters, but they didn't get 3 attackers in every rotation.
This year they can actually run a true 6-2 because Thurlby is a legitimate attacker. So maybe that might justify going with the 6-2. It could add that extra dimension that the attack has been lacking. Maybe get the LS a few more 1 on 1s without dumping the high floating sets Shoji likes so much.

IB, what I was referring to is the fact that some freshmen are still a somewhat unknown entity until you actually see how they perform once practice and the season actually get underway. Long Beach has 7 freshmen coming in, two of which will, in all probability, see a great deal of playing time. I doubt that either are FOY candidates but that has never ever been a goal of Brian G's. You don't win titles and go to final fours on the strength of your freshmen!!! Neither Tayyiba nor Cheryl even saw the court until their 3rd and 2nd years(respectively) at the Beach. Furthermore I have seen FOY's who have been great their freshmen years but then never really got a whole lot better in the ensuing 3 years!

You're not going to give us ANY info on your team because either A) you know we'll use it to crush your team (Idaho to pound LBSU this season. ) B) you don't know (which is what you claim, but we know you know more about the program than that), C) You are actually Brian GimarILLo and the players and player's parents know it and you don't want to insult any of the new freshman as to cause another mass exodus from the Beach, D) None of the above, but partly some of the above, E) All of the above, but contrarily, none of it. F) Long Beach is going to have a really bad season and you don't want to think about all the freshman mistakes you're going to have to sit through. Ok, just messing with you, ABMan. Hope you don't take me too seriously. : ) Oh, and guys, redshirts are ineligible for the FOY award, so Cayley is out of contention.
