Go to picture #7 on the second index and there are 3 future LBSU 49er's Mariko, Kristen, and Dianne. I was trying to paste the picture but didn't know how!

So does that mean Olivia Waldowski of UCSB is out of the running for FOY because she's a redshirt? I think this rule stinks. Isn't there a newcomer of the year award that redshirts can qualify?
This rule stinks.

IB, not going to make any excuses for this year's LB State team. Crum and Uhart(not in that order either) are the two incoming freshmen who will see the most playing time, in all probability! This is going to be a huge challenge for the coaches. I would not be surprised to see the losses in double digits this year! Even with one of the easiest schedules in many years, there has been more change than this program has seen in years, with more young players coming in any year since 1995(Misty's freshmen year). Furthermore there are not any returning dominant AA type players to "hold things together" while the youngsters mature. Sooooo, I think that it will be a very unusual and interesting year and if teams are going to get their "licks" in they had better do it this year, because I think that in a couple of years these players could become a Final Four type of group!

Thank you ABman, nicely said. I have a sensation in my left toe that says LBSU will still be better than most people think. It was wrong before though, so don't know how much to trust it.

I think it's easy and tempting to go with "name" players without ever having seen them play at the higher college level.
In 2001, no one except for some recruiters heard of Stacey Gordon before she signed up for classes at Ohio State and discovered Columbus was a big town. She, of course, won AVCA FOY over some pretty decent "name" contenders like Ogonna Nnamani and Keao Burdine. Another foreign product Mira Topic of Texas made a huge impact that year and, like Gordon, she never made anybody's list before the season started.
Let's just forget about 2002 because a "name" player, Kim Glass, won the honor. My argument is only good for 2001.
On the other hand, Bibiana Candelas had a lot of notoriety before she set foot on the USC campus in 2002. The notoriety was well deserved because, for one thing, why would anyone want to set foot on the USC campus? (Hey, it's just a joke Trojans! I've seen the campus. It's not bad.) My point is, based on all the talk about Bibiana, you would think AVCA should have just given her the honor without playing out the season!
So, what am I saying? Some years, you can't predict squat. Other years, it's a gimmee.
I'm looking forward to the season and I won't be surprised if some "unknown" talent snatches the prize away from Uhart, Crum, Kamana'o, Richards, Houghtelling, Baum, and McCray. In fact, the season might be downright more interesting if she did.
I won't do this prediction stuff because so many intangibles and variables are involved beyond the "name." Besides, my vacuum tube computer can't spit out ONE name with all that number crunching. It can add and carry, but floating point is a problem.

Where they went and the availability of quality playing time are both critical elements of this decision making process. I would think that based on "pre-season" hoopla, Kristin Richards should be the "hands on favorite" for FOY award. There must have been hundreds of posts about her prior to making her decision(which she and her family played out like a stratovarious). Anyway, for Stanford's sake she is going to have to play like a legit FOY candidate if Stanford is going to be anything like they have been these past 2 seasons!

Everyone talks about how Cayley can bang the ball. No one has mentioned how Kanoe can REALLY bang the ball!
This girl can be an amazing offensive threat, 5'8" or not. She SERIOUSLY reminds me of Misty May. She is actually ahead of Misty as a setter as an incoming freshmen. Misty is probably a better hitter, but Kanoe is pretty close.
I wont be surprised if Kanoe rocks the volleyball world in a couple of years and turns mediocre hitters, if there are any, into all americans just like Misty did.

Minnesota has 3 incoming recruits. Kelly Bowman and Meredith Nelson were both highly thought of coming out of high school so they could be potential FOY candidates. The 3rd, Marci Peniata, I've been told could be as good on defense and serve receive as Paula Gentil.quote] There has been a lot of talk, especially from (R)uffda, about Nelson being redshirted. Do you know if that is still the thinking?

Saw Robin yesterday in Brian's VB Camp. She's a questionable 6'2", but probably a legit 6'1".

There has been a lot of talk, especially from (R)uffda, about Nelson being redshirted. Do you know if that is still the thinking? I think that was speculation, somewhat based on the logjam originally thought to be at middle for the Gophers and Nelson's relative lack of high level experience. Since those comments were made Bethany Brafford (one of Minnesota's starting middles for the past 3 years) decided to leave the team and Nelson has apparently been impressive while playing for her JO club team.

Just reading through the archives, killing some time before I have to catch a flight. I thought the discussion in this old thread was interesting. At the beginning of the year I never would have thought that Kamana'o would have won the freshman of the year award. It will be fun to watch these players develop over the next three years, which ones will become all americans, and which ones won't quite live up to all the hype.
