Any reason they didn't play AVP or FIVB this past week? Or did I miss their names?

I'm completely guessing here, but I would not be surprised in the least if they're taking some time to try and heal up - Brooke's shoulder still ain't right. BTW - and I wouldn't have said this a few months ago - I'm becoming more convinced that the #2 American team right now is currently playing at USC.

Assume Kerri retires or is out long term with an injury post Olympics, then assume April picks up Claes (I think thats the redhead). How long until they win an FIVB, assuming they continue playing together until they do?

Do you think the extra support USC is able to offer (versus the meager sponsorship dollars available for up-and-coming pairs outside of NCAA) has something to do with that? Do they continue as a pair after USC?

Lots of variables in play, so it's hard to make any definitive statements. Does Kerri still want to play after Rio? (personally, I don't think so - her body is being held together with gum and baling wire as it is. Another four years? Not seeing it - but never say never when it comes to Walsh). Does April want to continue after Rio? (If she wins gold in Rio, I can see her wanting to transition out of the sport. Plus, she wants to make some little volleyball players sooner rather than later).
Claes/Hughes are still very young - 20 and 21 respectively - and it's highly likely they come back for their senior year to play and graduate from 'SC. Which means neither would be available until halfway (ish) through the 2017 FIVB tour. Does someone like April dump a partner to try and pick up one of the USC girls right before the 2017 World Championships? Would Sara/Kelly be all that interested in splitting up in the first place? I think they want to make a run at 2020 as a team, but that's just my opinion.
In other words, beats me. But the post-Rio shakeout is gonna be interesting.

Plenty more work to do @ USC & zero reason to leave campus without a degree, or even a masters since there is time before a 2020 run .
Kelly has amazing growth curve and it continues weekly while playing with Sara. They finished the season 48-0 with a 73-0 match winning streak dating back last season.
Her phone will ring but it will go to voice mail.
I'd take an up and coming Hughes over Ross if she wants to break records for the next 15 years.

Thats not counting sponsors. Thats an incentive. Besides Claes would not need to leave school, just stop playing beach volleyball and, compare to pro training, thats largely a waster for a player of her abilities now. Hughes will never be as good as April is right now and in most scenarios she never comes close. If April asks (college aside) Claes would be insane to stick with Hughes.

Is Claes now considered the stronger of the 2 players? I thought I read a year or so ago, that Hughes was the stronger player, and that she was more likely to be looking for a better partner post-USC.

She has expressed interest in beating Karch's win record, so I think she could stick around for a few years. She is currently is 20 behind, and stands to take a huge chuck out of the deficit this year. She also said this in 2014 where she probably figured they would go on a terror in 2015. Instead she virtually missed out on a full year's opportunity of titles. I could see her and April playing stateside only.

As a pro, Hughes will end up being the closest thing to Misty May we're going to see for many years. And I don't say things like that lightly.

Right now, I think we both agree that April is the best player in the world. She has won slightly less than half of the FIVBs she has played with a healthy Kerri and all of the AVPs. Thats a long hard road for Hughes to get there. Would Misty herself have gotten there if she were playing with EY rather than Kerri? I will avoid starting an April versus Misty argument here. I havent seen Hughes nearly as much as a lot of people here, but how good an indicator can you get when she is playing college kids? With some players, Loiola, Walsh, Evandro etc. their athleticism shows you that they will be that good if they just work at it. Is Hughes like that? Last year in the two AVP events I saw her in, she didnt look like it. When Summer was a year younger than Hughes is right now she had an AVP win and a bunch of good FIVB finishes. People were talking about her exactly the same way you are mentioning Hughes. Whats different about Sara? thats not rhetoric, Im curious.

I think Hughes combines exceptional athleticism - very explosive with a big vertical - with an intuitive understanding of the game - reading hitters, reading blockers and so on. And she's still learning. Another comparison that comes to mind is Hughes as a bigger version of Larissa. When Hughes goes full time pro, it's going to be fun to watch.
