Florida middle Sherri Williams signs with the German 1st Div team VfB Suhl. Erin Byrd and Paige Benjamin played for this team in the past season. The team finished 6th there but they were very unlucky with injuries in the last 2 months of the season, otherwise they would have ended up 4th.

What makes it difficult for me in following these foreign leagues are:
(1) the league structure is unclear (e.g., some leagues have relegation like in soccer where the best teams in a lower division has a chance to move up to a higher division in a playoff with the worst teams in the higher division); (2) team names seem to change regularly, esp. with change in corporate sponsorship; (3) "stars" are not promoted (well, at least not here, which is understandable) on their website; (4) can't watch or listen to their matches (again...understandable); (5) stats are not readily available; (6) don't know who's playing whom and where; (7) the constant migration of players from one team to another, and from one league to another; (8) and dammit! players get married so they change their last names which makes tracking them a tad difficult.
So, essentially, it's very easy to break the bond that was difficult to establish in the first place. There's something to be said for consistency and continuity.
A thread like this keeps me abreast of situations but after a few minutes, the interest is gone because the bond is not there. Am I alone?
(I have a tough enough time trying to keep up with all the changes in Conference USA...)

hallo from Suhl, Germany it is hard to find some informations about foreign players. maybe you can help Sherri is the 3rd american player of our team. a pre-season-photo can be found here: file1.carookee.com/forum/VfB91suhl/2/file/794147/team2.jpgor on www.vfb91suhl.com => Team 1. B'liga Sherri is a fantastic player, who helped us to get back to old strength in blocking and attacking. also her cheerfulness and unusual power - comparing to the most players in germany - is wonderfull. last week, Sherri was in hospital for a small surgery on her meniscus, but she is getting fine, and can play again after x-mas. with her help, we are back on the planned play-off place in our league & also the first time at half-final of the german volleyball-cup, also when she only could sit on the "bench" beside the team. Paige Benjamin visited our team 2 weeks ago. she is preparing her career after volleyball, because she cant play anymore. unfortunately we got no information about Erin. Maybe someone of you got some. nice greetings from Suhl, Ralf

Is women's volleyball actually kindof a major sport over there, or is it more of a minor league (like MLS or MLL or something here)?

hard to say. if i am right, soccer in the USA is like volleyball in Germany. i would say 1st there is soccer, then a long time nothing, followed up from handball, ice-hockey, basketball, then volleyball. but its moving up, coz the German national female volleyball team is getting better. but only Eurosport is broadcasting some international games like Olympia or WC or EC.

When they are being played you can follow the "gametracker" feature. www.cev.lu/mmp/online/website/highlights/index_EN.html

Erin Byrd is currently "trying out" with Indias of Mayaguez in the Puerto Rican League. nice to hear, that she is still playing. In Suhl she had to play libera for the rest of the last season, coz our top-libera was out coz of a very bad disease. unfortunately, i cant translate the text on their site...

Just wanted to let you know--if you don't already, that the site for the P/R League is Zonazaguera.com. Click on the word "enter" at the bottom of the little cartoon and that takes you in. Find 'voleibol feminine'. For very loose translation of text there, simply copy your Spanish text and paste it in this site--www.babelfish.altavista.com--on the left side of the page is a dropdown that lets you select the Spanish to English translation.
