I know some superstitious folks are worried this may jinx the team, but I was never one to buy into that kind of stuff, so, anyone willing to venture a guess on the chances of the US winning gold? The US came up short not once, but three times (1984, 2008, 2012), will the fourth time be lucky? Will the US finally overcome this hurdle where they choke in the final and has to settle for silver?

This would be easier to predict, for any country, if there was a dominant team out there. When has that happened? Almost every Olympics, there have been 3-5 teams with a legitimate shot at winning gold -- and I don't see how it is any different this time. So what are the odds? How about 1 in 5, with no other country being better than 1 in 5 as well?
As for choking, I just don't buy it. It's one match. It'd be like saying Golden State choked in game 7. If they played 4 out of 7, then we might be able to draw better conclusions. But, alas, they don't.
I hope it happens. But if it doesn't, I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of. If it DOES, I don't think it means the USA is suddenly THE dominant VB power.

I mean, no one would ask this question if this was the "Dream Team Era" in Olympic basketball, because everyone already knows the answer. As for choking, fair enough, maybe its down to just luck. So tell me, do you think the US stands a better chance this time?

I would bet heavily if I could get 4 to 1 or 5 to 1 like the previous posters suggested.
US was favored over Brazil when they played in Thailand. Moving that match to Brazil, the home team will be a slight favorite I think. I'm guessing Vegas will put them at 35-40% to win gold. I think it's 95% that one of China, Brazil and the US win the gold.

Especially given that Rio is not London. The one thing this version has going for it is the other teams are arguably not as good as they were in London. But it remains to be seen how much of that is wishful thinking.

China and Serbia got way better. Netherlands is tough. Italy has more firepower. Russia is better (if they have a healthy Kosheleva). Brazil has more confidence.

I wish this forum had some form of play currency, like VT$, that allow members to use it for a variety of things, such as purchases (although not possible in this forum right now because there's nothing to purchase), ability to make polls, and making bets like the one "proposed" in this thread. For example, I'd bet some VT$ that USA would win bronze. Of course, VT$ would be difficult to manage, perhaps a pain in the arse, for the admins.

I'm not even sure if the admins or this site are even capable of adding features that can automatically handle VT$ transactions. I'm sure the last thing the admins want is to take care of the accounting of the VT$ by hand with pen and paper.

This may have been the odds going into London, but by the finals I think everyone agreed the US was the favourite to win that match. I still believe the absence of Hooker will hurt at some point.
3/2 Brazil (Finished 1st) 2/1 USA (2nd) 3/1 Russia (5th) 10/1 Italy (5th) 20/1 Serbia (11th) 25/1 China (5th) 25/1 Turkey (9th) 50/1 Japan (3rd)
Brazil is not as strong as 4 years ago, and I am sure the US squad knows the narrative. I pick the US to win, but if they lose, my goodness how to explain the best finisher in the world did not even make the squad.
