I got a thing on FB from Susquehanna Smash (a grass tournament in MD), which apparently now offers a 3k first place prize. It started me thinking about this question:
If one of the top players traveled to all the biggest "amateur" events in the US one summer and won them all, how much would they make? I am guessing they could clear 25k
The bigger ones I am aware of:
Pottstown - $7,000 Big Shot - $2,000 (I would have guessed a lot more) Motherlode - $2,500 (est.) Susquehanna - $3,000 Seaside - $3,500 King of the Mountain - $1,500 (est.) Waupaca EEVB Nationals - $2,000 CBVA Santa Monica - $2,500 Big Money - $1,500 (Estimated, there are two of these so 1,500 each)
Anyone know others and prize moneys? JB?

I have heard from some of the past winner's motherlode varies depends on who wins, a Cali team think gets more, likes a "big name" draw and hoping to pay them more then they come back. So from what I heard between $2-3k for 1st. Vail just under $2k, like $1500 maybe? But then you got to split that remember too. Not that I have won any of them, or a B tourney for that matter. When I see advertisements on tourneys around the country seems like purse is generally around $5-7k, then split that for each gender and spread that between 1st, 2nd 3rd's etc and that leaves you around $1-1.5k for 1st place then split with your partner.
Is it just me or do you find it weird none of these tournaments you listed (or many others for that matter) post prize money? Why is it such a secret in our sport?
So off the top of my head to answer your question I would say maybe $15k ($30k as a team) before travel expenses too.

Possibly so if there is a shortfall they can just take some out (who would ever add things up to see if $8,000 total was paid out across half a dozen divisions) I was at the Motherlode the year or so after Katrina, when someone from Louisiana (Derek Zimmerman maybe?) won and there was a collection taken to add to the prize. I asked a friend who had played there almost since the beginning of the event what First place usually got and he said "Whatever Leon feels like paying." Don't know how true that was.

Rich from EEVB always posts either the purse by gender, or the % breakdown of entry fees. Big shots Champ. is $5k purse for men The EEVB volley america National Champ is also $5k for Men

Pottstown - $7,000 Big Shot - $5,000 Motherlode Susquehanna - $3,000 Seaside King of the Mountain Motherlode Waupaca EEVB Nationals - $5,000 CBVA Santa Monica - $2,500 Big Money - $1,500 (Estimated, there are two of these so 1,500 each) dig the beach (FLorida) has pots that are regularly more than 1.5K, Their last one was $2200, and I'm sure this weekend's will be too. They pay 100% of of entry fees @ $100 a team. Any Open in Florida with 20 teams is going to pay out about $1500. Don't think any tournament director pays out less than 80% of entry fees.

We are starting to mix up the prize pot with the 1st place prize. Susquehanna 3K for first is not the same as Big Shots 5K, as that 5K is split for all the men. I did not see a breakdown either. I would say that is similar for several of the others mentioned above (don't have time to figure out who is talking about total pool vs. 1st place prize). I thought most tournaments pay out around 50-30-10-10 (at least up here in the northeast) in terms of %'s of prize pool to 1st-2nd-3rd-3rd. Unless Florida does a top heavy payout, they would need to be at 30 teams for that 1500 to be split for first. Great American Volleyball (NJ) has several guaranteed $1500 TOTAL purse tournaments for men, but those are the ones outside of the regular locations to entice teams to travel. In the heart of the summer, it is pretty common for them to consistently have enough teams for bigger than the 1500 total prize pots, but not enough to seriously make a living.

Thats my fault I misunderstood what others were posting. The ones I posted were first place prizes. Ill amend my original post to include all events mentioned but not the first place prize until someone mentions that

Added the EEVBs and the Colorado estimates based on rtovfresh. Seaside was supposedly 26k total last year and 15k a few years before (purse) but the only figure I could find for first was from 2003 and it was 2,000.
BTW its bad enough at the pro level but at the regional level having equal payouts to men and women seems absurd. Maybe this is different elsewhere but almost every tournament I have ever played in the men's open has been double, triple or more the size of the women's

I think this trend is going to continue with JRs and college stepping up.
