Ouch. Americans allowed a 10-0 run in the third.

Disastrous result, to be honest. Lauren/Brooke are up against it now. They play the #1 seed next, who have routinely hammered Fendrick/Sweat this season. Then a Russian team that has given them all kinds of trouble. Going to be very difficult (but not impossible) for Fendrick/Sweat to break pool. Doesn't help that Sweat can barely swing with a torn rotator cuff.

Yes, 96 Atlanta
Barb Fontana and Linda Hanley defeated Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno giving Holly and Nancy 5th.
Then Barb and Linda lost to Jackie Silva and Sandra Pires in the semi 15-8(one setmatch)
and lost in the Bronze to Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Australia 12-11 and 12-7.

Yes, 96 Atlanta Barb Fontana and Linda Hanley defeated Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno giving Holly and Nancy 5th. I remember watching that live. Reno went to her knees to dig a ball out of the net (failed), and picked up a handful of sand and poured/tossed it. I remember Karch/Kent winning, and Karch screaming words not remembered at then-FIVB president Ruben Acosta. I remember the one heavyset Brasil fan who was sponsored by some bank in Brasil. I remember that ACOG messed up the return buses for one of the days, and we waited on the beach for over an hour This was back when camcorders (haha, remember those?) were the latest fad, long before phone cameras and social media. Gosh, I'm ... old Now I just sit in my office and watch on my PC --

Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard finished dead last in their pool in 2004. I'm not sure they've spoken to each other since. Of course, they were barely speaking to each other in Athens.

I asked about the elimination round, not the medal round. That is, has an American team (pair) ever failed to make it the round of 16? (Not made it out of pool.) I remember where the teams finished in 1996. Did they use the same pool + elimination rounds format? That I can't remember.
