what a mistake, served Phil. That was unbelievable. Lets see - block lucena 2x in a row ... so lets get tricky and serve to Phil  Whatever - USA wins. Right now I like this USA team due to Phils ridiculous blocking - but can he last the tournament and the grind. Im not betting on it - but then again, I thought the Brazilian team down 0-2 was going to win it! |

Phil looked totally gassed a quarter of the way through the 2nd set and it was pretty concerning. He has always had that lethargic demeanor but this was differnt. He was hanging on. They called a timeout at around 17-14 or so and when he came back he appeared rejuvenated again and pretty strong to close it out. Im sure the humidity in Rio can be a factor. Maybe Nick and him should have trained a week or more in Florida to prepare?

Boredom is more of an issue for the players. Medalists will have played a maximum of seven matches (including the lucky loser match) in fourteen days. |

I am not so sure, when I checked the local conditions at the time of the match is was ~79F with an RH of 69% (heat index of 83f). Certainly did not seem that extreme but both teams were working hard. Phil is a big (really big!) guy and there were some long rallies which certainly take a lot out of you. But at the end of the match, Phil's shirt did not look nearly as damp as Nick's shirt. But yeah, serving PD at 19 was just a dumb dumb play. You have not stopped him all day, why would they think that would be a good idea. I get that he was gassed but to just hand it to him on a platter? |

Strangely enough about 3 points into the game and the same thing that happened in the Gibb/Patterson match happens here. Phil gets a block, then hits it again and instead of Nick hitting it over he sets Phil and Phil crushes one. No 4 touch call by the ref. Italians challenge it (which the announcer says isn't allowed) but the ref allows it and calls 4 touches on the USA and gives the point to Italy.
