Best beach match so far! Lucena totally shanked that easy roll kill. No doubt, he makes 2 great ups when they have match point and gets a chance to put the match away but rolls it out of bounds, and not that close to the line either. I'm sure he was a little gassed but that could have been costly. Also, Phil had been crushing balls all game and he gets a serve at 20-20 and tries to roll one thats easily picked up by Lupo and then put away to give the Italians match point at 20-21. Thankfully the USA sided out there and hung on to win the game.

That was incredible. I loved the ending after Nick/Phil won and both teams realized what they had just done and gave hugs while the crowd stood and cheered.

They will get an Austrian team next in the round of 16 (one of the best 3rd placed teams) - pretty good draw assuming that both of the AUT team already had their best match of the tournament vs. BRA & USA...

One thing that I'm curious about is why Phil doesn't go over on 2 more often to take the load off Nick. I don't have exact numbers for this but just going off what I've seen, Bruno, a small right-handed defender playing on the right, goes over on 2 more often than Phil, a big right-handed attacker on the left.
This team is excellent but their Achilles heel is Nick's consistency in siding out. He dishes up some perfect optionable passes but Phil always choses to set him. Not sure what's going on there but I'd love to hear some opinions.

And since he's a great setter he chooses to give his partner a good set instead of taking the risk. With Todd I kind of understood it since Todd was very good a siding out in his prime. With Nick I'd say he should go over on 2 more often. I agree the lower part of the roster is stacked. It's a pity that we're not gonna see the Phil/Nick vs Alison/Bruno finals.

So, what was the reason Alison and Bruno are second and not first in their pool? They have better rally point ratio than Ranghieri/Carambula.

Earlier in this thread a lot of people took shots at the Italians for serving Phil at 19 all in a previous game, but here it worked, and having watched Phil for a long time, he often seems to give up a point when he hasnt been served in a while. I think Phil is not as comfortable out of the normal flow of the game as he should be. I think its why he is so hesitant to hit on two or to change his jump serve and where he hits it from. The on 2 thing is maybe the biggest problem. An active on 2 game by Phil would really help Nick side out, which as Arda mentioned is always where this team will get in trouble. With this draw it will be tough for them to medal

Phil ended the match by going on 2, left handed.
Crazy they have to play Bruno/Alison in the quarters. Bruno Alison won 5 sets and lost 2 in the pool. Italy won 4 sets and lost 3 (and lost head to head vs Brazil), but win the pool on points ratio...not right.
