Finally got to watch the match, why oh why do our matches against Italy turn into ugly volleyball... on both sides? I thought Glass continued to play well. I was so happy to see her making so many sets to the middle of the court. This match showed how Hill can go from white hot to stone cold pretty quickly. Glad to see Robinson come off the bench and play well.
This match I finally realized my biggest issue with Murphy. Anyone else notice that can be quite tentative with her attack approach? I know the sets to her have been a mixed bag in terms of location and tempo, but I don't think that should excuse her from ALWAYS approaching the ball with intensity and power. Sometimes, she simply skips into her approach. Just by watching her approach, you can tell when she is going to tip the ball.

We all know she doesn't belong on the team, but it's not her fault she is.

Alisha* Glass. I think our criticisms come from frustration. As a country we are coming up short for Gold and we shouldn't be. We have the talent and the programs. It's the one sport that we should be dominating but aren't. Surprising that even the men's program has surpassed the women's. With that said our girls are amazing athletes and we are lucky to have such a deep roster and I think even through injury and absences we have managed to put together a solid squad. I think even our B squad could even be competitive, but certainly not medal favorites. Why would you think the USA should be "dominating". I would think that countries that have the top professional leagues (like Italy, Brazil, Japan, Russia) are the ones who would be more likely to be "dominating". And, "the men have surpassed the women"? Maybe you aren't paying attention, but right now, the women are 4-0 and the men are 1-2 and fighting just to get out of their pool. Our programs and pool of athletes is much bigger than any of those countries. Also our development programs are ahead of those countries as well. We have nice facilities and better feeder programs. Our girls develop through high school and college. There really is no reason we shouldn't have won Olympic Gold. Although we have recently come up short. Maybe you haven't been paying attention but the women's team won a World Championship only recently in 62 years in 2014. Our Women's Indoor Team has never won the Olympics something our men's team has done more than once and also recently. Our men's team has reached the pinnacle of best in the world in volleyball more than once before our women's team still has not that done that. The Olympics is the peak of indoor.

Professional leagues are comprised of different nationalities, so that really is not a determining factor. Grassroots and minor league resources would be better indicators. The US clearly has grassroots vball down pat, go watch AAU's in Daytona, and the NCAA is a great feeder system.
Look who is coming next, Carlini, Washington, Allhasan, Payne (can not wait to see those 4 playing together). LS is the one position that seems a little soft in the NCAA right now.
The US was clearly the best team in London to me, and have the squad to win this time. If they lose to Brazil, I think it will be due to a lack of a go to terminator on their squad. Foluke can fill that role, but would require more of a commitment from Glass. I also think Murphy has it in her to put the hammer down in a big match, although I doubt many on here share that view.

So efficient in movement and technique. Stud athleticism. She fixes bad sets in a way that makes them look good. Her blocking is great, serves well, excellent teammate. I noticed her leadership in timeouts. Always positive, and smiling.
I think she is the best player in the world, although because of her position it can be hard to defend that. Certainly the best middle IMO.
The best Middles in the world right now are, IMO and in no particular order: Foluke Thaisa Fabiana Rasic I've been underwhelmed by Rasic this tournament but I would agree.

Glass is easily the best setter we have - because of the other elements of her game. She is a very blocker for a setter, is very good defensively and has great range running down errant passes. When our passing is good she executes the quick offense just fine. You literally just described Carli. Thanks

Times she has done very well and other times she hasn't. Same for Lowe or have you forgotten about the time we played China and she got stuffed off the court?

Also VolleyTX don't you know, you can't assess Murphy's performance negatively? The Murphy police will come and get you, and will drag Karsta down with you :/

The Murphy police will come and get you, and will drag Karsta down with you :/ You guys act like you don't know their tendencies. They are both guilty of doing the EXACT same thing. Sometimes they hit too steep into more well formed blocks instead of higher into or off on them. For whatever, inexplicable reason they both can get into a rut doing that. Then they switch out one of them and they come in and play better. This habit drives me insane. Hopefully the staff will remind them of this again when we play China and Brazil. I mean I expect China to have ball control issues so it probably won't matter much if either opp struggles, but when we play Brazil that is going to be a different story. Brazil's floor defense and transition game is going to eat us alive again probably...

Professional leagues allow players to keep playing, and earning a living, well into their 30's. That is where you develop depth in your player pool. Most professional leagues limit the number of foreign players who can play on each team, so they develop their home-grown players. The foreign players are already established stars. It is no coincidence that, other than the U.S., the top national teams are mostly the countries with the strong professional leagues. When you listen to the commentary on the matches, you hear about countries like Brazil, Italy and Russia having first time Olympians who are in their late 20's and early 30's. How many "late-bloomers" do you find on the USA teams?

It is no coincidence that, other than the U.S., the top national teams are mostly the countries with the strong professional leagues. The top two Italian teams were starting 6 Americans between them. A decade ago, you may have had a point but there are more than enough professional opportunities for Americans. The best league in the world, Turkey, couldn't qualify for the Games here. The Netherlands, the second place team in our division, does not have a fully professional league. Top NCAA teams could compete in the Serbian league. This is wrong. There aren't legions of "late bloomers" lurking around those teams. Those first-time Olympians are there because they've been lifetime reserves who haven't had talent from younger generations come up to replace them when the starters get hurt/retired - because they don't have nearly the depth the USA does because of the ..... NCAA system (and the club system designed to grab scholarships). We have way more players playing, and they continue playing later than any other countries. In other countries, girls who aren't seen as big-time prospects by their mid-late teams don't continue playing and develop late because there aren't Title IX-fueled scholarships to fund that many opportunities.
