us had the momentum going into the 3rd set ... but brazil really fed off the emotion of the crowd.
tough luck that #1 (brazil) and #3 (usa) seeds had to meet in a quarterfinal ...

brazil scrambling ... running off the court to retrieve balls ... and they win the point... wow great volleyball ... bad for us ... 9-5 bra g3 us call t/o This was the make or break point IMO. With huge advantage on the good side during this game, if US had gotten that point while on the bad side with a side switch coming up the next point, US would have been in good shape. Good play all the way around.

I'm really annoyed by this. Phil & Nick were such a lock to medal before this tournament and got shafted with a really bad break. They actually took care of their pool, and paid the price for winning it because Bruno/Allison were sloppy and couldn't win their pool. Seriously, this is maybe the most lopsided draw I've ever seen in a bracket elimination in any sport ever. It is a JOKE. I hope the Dutch take care of them.
Oh and I love how the Brazil crowd and come and raise hell for their athletes in Swimming and Track/Field (Sports of which they have NO hope of any medals), but this match starts half full when they have the #1 team. Whatever, I am glad the host nation is having a horrendous Olympics as far as medals go. They have been a disgusting host.

They won the toss and got the good side and Nick couldn't deal with the wind. Also horrible strategy from Nick/Phil. Look at the jump serves they sent at Allison when they got the good side. If they wanted him to make a good pass they could not have done better. Also the wind is blowing so hard that teams are giving up 2-3 real points every time through the bad side. Hey guys what about a lower set? That way the wind doesnt affect the ball as much. I think I learned that playing B in New Jersey when I was 12. Shame Nick and Phil didnt, Phil looked a little hurt he was moving very poorly, not hustling and some easy plays he couldnt reach. That said, Nick choked. He couldnt pass the ball or set it, and despite the fact that Allison hit two shots the whole match (line dink and hard crosscourt) he dug nothing. With the match in reach the Brazilians inexplicably serve Phil who makes a solid pass, Nick promptly bumps the ball over the net. That more or less ended the game. For Nick/Phil to beat that team Phil has to dominate and Nick has to not aggressively screw up. Neither one of those things happened.

Does anyone think the USA vs Brazil match(es) with Kerri/April will actually be more Pro-USA than Pro-Brazil? The USA fans have been doing a good job of filling up the stands and getting behind their girls. IIRC in the Beijing Final, they had a 50/50 crowd because Kerri/Misty were so popular and promoted by the USA.

Heartbreaking loss, I really thought after the 2nd they had it, and then it fell apart, quickly.
I like swim 4 life post though, showing lots of anger towards the Brazilians as fans and hosts, I'm digging it! Anywho, it wasn't "bad" draw or anything else - it's the olympics and every match should be against a top rated team. Nick and Phil had the chance to close this out and the bottom-line is they didn't

This should have been the gold medal match. Shame they had to meet so early while the mediocre Russian teams get to play each other.

For Nick/Phil to beat that team Phil has to dominate and Nick has to not aggressively screw up. Neither one of those things happened. I saw something similar. When they served Alison, esp in the 3rd set, it was right at him. He didn't even have to move. They needed to make him move on that bad ankle, like they did in sets 1 and 2. USA had 2 aces in the 1st set because of that. They needed to keep that pressure on. I also noticed that Phil just didn't seem like he was moving well. Sickness or maybe that calf muscle. He seemed to be falling to the ground an awful lot for no reason. That said, the Brazilians played better. Those scramble plays by Bruno were insane. They deserved the win. The only thing that seemed strange was that Brazil not only had the good side, but also had the serve in the 3rd set.

I think Nick/Phil probably chose to receive which is probably the smart play, but putting the onus on Bruno/Allison to make a play in the wind to start off may have been a better bet.
I also would have liked to see more serves to Bruno. They went to him twice and got one, late in the match. With the wind blowing that much I think I would rather have the little guy adjusting to a bad set than the big guy to a good one.

I was in London for a few days of the 2012 games (on business) and you couldnt get tickets to anything other than the 9th place women's saber fencing. In Brazil it feels like you could walk into any event you wanted.
