OHs and MBs played really well, Glass set well (except to Murphy) and as Banwarth was her usual self. Japan just played exceptionally well when everything was on the line.
If Larson and Hill continue to play like this in the next match (and our MBs will always deliver), we will have a good shot at the gold medal match regardless of who we play.
Would starting Lowe be a better option than Murphy? Murphy has been a liability in both blocking and offense in most of the games. To win the gold or over Russia/Serbia, the Opposite has to show up. Murphy didn't show up today partly due to Glass' setting.

I don't understand why glass can't give Murphy a little more arc to the sets, it would still be fast.

Murphy the WEAK LINK on the team, why the heck is she starting. The U.S. will not win GOLD with Murphy on the floor.

I hope that we do not come up short on the gold because we didn't have a strong enough opposite based upon all the possible choices Karch had for this quad.

I have to agree Kro, only saw less than half of the match, but RS offense is sputtering. Also a few people keep saying Murphy does not hit hard enough for an opposite. I think she hits plenty hard, when the set is in her spot. Glass should be able to put it there, she is one of the best in the world. But you can't remove Glass just cause of what's going on with Murphy.

I hope that we do not come up short on the gold because we didn't have a strong enough opposite based upon all the possible choices Karch had for this quad. Both opps are strong enough. Each has struggled in different matches and done better in others. The question is are we using them correctly, in our set selection and in the execution of the set itself. The it her day Lowe git stuffed a good amount in dub sub example but I don't think she was able to use her heightwith each set perhaps who knows...

Does anyone have player/team statistics for all the matches? I think Murphy has hit negative, under .200 and under .100 the last 3 matches.

Murphy's stats for the last three matches from what I calculated: Italy: 5-7-22 (-0.091) China: 11-6-28 (0.179) Japan: 4-3-14 (0.071) Overall: 54-22-129 (0.248) I did make a spreadsheet for everyone, but I don't know how to upload it Lowe isn't any better, 21-10-45 hitting 0.244

This was a good win finally a good serving match. We play our game we win. Biggest complaint is Murphy but she wasn't being put where she needs to be but she made some errors on her own. Volleyball is such a mental game I wonder if she is in her own head. I think Murphy can still perform.
This for me was a great Glass match though. Her hustle alone should keep her on team USA she doesn't quit on balls, her defense is good. Also I loved her connection with the middles. Foluke and Adams had such a great match today.
The funny thing is we can still improve a piece of the puzzle is always missing. Past games it has been serving, setting, middles, now RS. If we click on all cylinders I believe we can take Gold In Brazil's backyard. Even if we don't we still have a good shot. This team is making it entertaining. Good win Ladies. Go USA!!!

As a setter myself, it can be hard to establish that connection on overhead sets. My concern is that Glass has had that issue in multiple matches, including today.
Having said that, Glass is still rated as the best setter in the Olympics, and the slide has been an effective weapon. so it is possible that it has more to do with the opposites than the sets.
As Larson said post match, this is a young team. The opposites are the youngest group, consisting of a former walk on who played part time until her senior year of college, and a girl who set half the time in a 6-2. That means there will be significant growth moving forward, but also some bumps in the road.
The team chemistry is really good, unlike in London. Every time this team has been tested, they've responded by performing at a high level. Everyone has contributed at one point or another, and they play for each other.
Japan was tough and gritty as they always are. So this is a nice win for the US and sets them up well for the semifinal.

Shocking when you see the numbers like that... Hill hitting only slightly better than Murphy.

Wow. Shocking when you see the numbers like that... Hill hitting only slightly better than Murphy. Hill's numbers are a little deceptive. 13 of her 21 errors came against Serbia and Italy, and a lot of those were in the 2nd set against Serbia where they blocked her quite a bit. Hill just flat out had a rough match against Italy (but so did everyone else). Plus she's getting most of the OOS system balls

I am going to trust in Karch and in what he's doing. He is familiar with Lowe and Murphy, knows their strengths and weaknesses, potentials, intangibles, and what they bring to team overall when on the floor. Personally, I wish he would play Lowe more. I wish he would start Lowe some sets, and leave her in for whole set. Murphy can compose and evaluate while on the bench, and start another set refreshed, hungry, and focused. Having Lowe alternate sets (more or less) also keeps the opponent's defense off balance.
This is what I want. However, I have to suck it up like everyone else, and trust that Karch knows what he's doing.
Anyway, go USA!
