Tomorrow, Tuesday 12 noon .. NBC .. Easy win for USA. Nothing is given. Just ask the US Women's soccer team (Colombia, Sweden), Cate Campbell (50/100m), or Simone Biles (balance beam final).

Totally get your point and sorry no one here probably cares that much but just wanna say that everyone who follows gymnastics knew that the balance beam title was not a given for Simone, and she knew it too. That was always going to be her weakest shot at gold of the events she qualified for. It was the media that tried to act like it was a given. But yes agreed, definitely not taking anything for granted when it comes to Japan, they've been known to really frustrate our defense and wear on us mentally.

Agreed!! I'm getting flashbacks of 2011 World Cup when we got swept by Japan! They eliminated china in London quarters too. USA will be fine tho! If they keep playing their game.

This is going to sound really weird, but I hope we have a terrible time passing tomorrow, but still get a win. Hopefully that would get any bad passing out of our system so to say
I say this because I'd rather have them pass terribly against Japan, rather than, say, Russia/Serbia in the semis, or Brazil in the finals

(Go USA) Oh you're not? Because it is. Enter the gymnastics community. She was definitely the favorite, but balance beam has never been her most consistent event. She's had major errors on it at each world championships but has her best routine in the final. Here she hadn't missed a routine yet so it was bound to happen. Also, both Laurie Hernandez and Sanne Wevers had been closing the gap in start value and have been extremely consistent in execution on beam in comparison to Simone. She was the favorite, but no one who actually follows and knows anything about gymnastics thought it was a sure thing. Actually, nothing on beam is ever a sure thing, and certainly not in this case.

I think defending the world title (2x), highest score in quals, highest score in team, and highest score in AA makes you a little more than a favorite. But yes, these are sports. There's a reason they're played.

Most would differentiate beam a little bit from other events and sports, but idk I guess I'm just a former gymnast and long time avid follower of the sport don't mind me

(Go USA) It is. She's had trouble with her beam consistency all year including a fall at the Olympic Trials last month. Vault and floor are certainties. Beam wasn't. Media hype.

Please add world championships 2010 where USA was expected to beat Japan in the bronze medal match and ended up with a 5 set loss

I think that USA got the best quarterfinal match-up possible with this Japan team.
The remaining match-ups may get a little dicey.
