Have heard that Karch stopped/didn't handset due to not giving up points on ref calls....any truth? Time frame?

Friend posted a YouTube of the 1996 Olympics and it does show Karch hand setting...SO, . . . .?

Atlanta games were played using FIVB rules which were very relaxed back then. Even Sinjin hand setted all the time.

He may have had more wins that Karch. The FIVB rules then were so relaxed that players who never hand set on the AVP were handsetting every ball. By 1996, Sinjin hadnt hand set on the AVP in 6 or 7 years, and he was putting paws on every ball.
I went to the trials in Baltimore and a few times some guy would mangle a set and play would sort of pause until his partner hit it with the other team completely distracted, then someone would start to argue then remember they were playing FIVB and walk back to receive serve.

Back in the day FIVB were calls were so Lax I could set nectar like Stokey and Ack….you could even get by chucking this stuff…..I think it was right aftr this Karch switched to bump setting:
