SandBows’ popularity continues to growBy Cindy Luis, Honolulu Star-AdvertiserOctober 6, 2016 The beach always is crowded in Hawaii. It especially will be this coming season for the Rainbow Wahine beach volleyball roster. Hawaii officially opened fall practice Wednesday with six beach-only returnees and eight freshmen. That number is expected to swell to at least 21 with the influx of cross-over indoor players in spring. “I’m excited about what we have coming in and what we have coming back,” said beach head coach Jeff Hall, also the associate head coach for the 12th-ranked Hawaii indoor team. “The freshmen are really committed and are super excited about being in the weight room, getting trained technically.” The SandBows went 18-10 last season, winning the inaugural Big West championship, and finishing fourth at the inaugural NCAA tournament. The upgrades to the program this year are a full-time assistant and a director of volleyball operations. Evan Silberstein is the current part-time assistant and indoor DOVO Kaleo Baxter will do double duty with the beach team. The assistant’s position was posted on the UH website on Sept. 30 with the application deadline Oct. 17. Hall said has received a lot of interest in the opening and expects to announce the hire within a few days of the application deadline. There’s also added interest from the indoor team to play beach in spring. Among those looking to cross over for the first time are senior Tayler Higgins and junior Savanah Kahakai. Hall said he had expected indoor freshmen Kirsten Sibley and Emma Smith to join in spring but now might have Norene Iosia as well. The other cross-over players are beach All-Americans Nikki Taylor and Emily Maglio, as well as Gianna Guinasso, Clare-Marie Anderson and Casey Castillo. Taylor, who will graduate in May, may forego playing in spring. “I told her to check her body, see where she’s at after the indoor season and make the best decision for her,” Hall said. “It depends on what her future plans are, playing (indoor) overseas, joining the national team. “If she’s back with us, she’ll be at No. 1 (pair).” Beach-only players returning are seniors Hannah Rooks, Mikayla Tucker, Hannah Zalopany and Sydney Shin; juniors Ka’iwi Schucht and Brooke Garlick; and sophomores Ari Homayun and Hi’ilawe Huddleston. The incoming freshmen are Julia Chizanskos, Cyrene Hertzog, Regan Hurkett, Sydney Kidd, Chloe Luyties, Morgan Martin and Amy Ozee (Seabury Hall) with UCLA transfer Laurel Weaver, a junior. NOTEThe team will hold its fourth Portuguese Horseshoe Tournament fundraiser on Oct. 23 from 1-6 p.m. at the UH soccer field on lower campus. Entry fees are $125 per player, $200 per two-person team or $1,000-$5,000 for sponsors that includes entry for five teams. Let's see: 26 players for 10 starting spots (5 flights), plus maybe 4 for the exhibition spots. That's a lot of players on the bench. And a lot of those freshmen were highly touted beach players in high school. Also, I don't know whether indoor players or beach players are more athletic, but I don't think the indoor players should assume they will start. I remember in the spring, Tai Manu-Olevao was on one of the flights and when that wasn't working out, she quit the team. Whether you start or not, you should join the beach team if you enjoy the sport and can contribute to the team -- whether that's on the sand or at the bench cheering your teammates on.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL SIGNS THREE FOR 201811.09.2016 www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2016/11/10/womens-beach-volleyball-beach-volleyball-signs-three-for-2018.aspx HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i beach volleyball head coach Jeff Hall announced the signing of three players for the 2018 season: Presley Forbes, Lea Monkhouse, Julianna "Pani" Napoleon. Forbes is a 5-4 player out of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif. She is the youngest player ever to get a California Beach Volleyball Association rating, earning her AA at the age of 10. She currently has held her AAA ranking for three straight years and was ranked fourth overall in 2016 with numerous Junior and Open victories to her credit over the years. "Presley is from the Mecca of beach volleyball, Manhattan Beach, where she is simply one of the most decorated junior beach players ever," states Hall. "She's been playing beach volleyball from birth and her volleyball IQ is off the charts while her touch on the ball is second to none. Forbes will bring a competitive fire to Manoa and a burning desire to keep up her winning ways at the collegiate level. Monkhouse's biggest accomplishments in beach volleyball include winning the 2016 Canadian National championships (18U); winning the 22U and 18U Ontario Provincial championships in 2016. The 6-0 player from Lorne Park High School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada also competed in the United States, where she placed fifth at the 18U AAU Nationals, fifth at the USAV High Performance Championships (19u); and fifth at the West Coast Junior Olympic Games. "Lea is one of the top youth beach players in Canada with an impressive list of accomplishments on both sides of the border," says Hall. "She is long and lean with solid fundamentals and a high reach that allows her to get on top of the ball. She's a great addition to our program. Napoleon is a 5-8 player out of Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista, Calif. As an indoor standout, Napoleon was a first team all-league selection in 2015. She has since turned her focus full time to beach volleyball this past summer. Napoleon won the Volley OC Collegiate Showcase in Huntington Beach last month and finished fifth overall at this year's 18U Cal Cup Championships in Manhattan Beach. "Pani is a great athlete with a powerful arm. She's a San Diego native of Samoan descent whose booming spikes will make her a fan favorite in Hawai'i," says Hall. "She's a late convert from the indoor side who is still learning the beach game but we expect great things from her as she gains more experience playing on the beach." "We are very happy with this year's incoming class. All of them bring tremendous talent to our program and all will help us with our ultimate goal of winning a National Championship for Hawai'i," states Hall. "The 'Sandbows' future looks promising with this incoming class mixed with a veteran core of returning players." 2018 SigneesPresley Forbes – 5-4, Mira Costa HS (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) Lea Monkhouse – 6-0, Lorne Park HS (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) Julianna "Pani" Napoleon – 5-8, Bonita Vista HS (Chula Vista, Calif.)

I'm wondering what the final roster for the upcoming season will look like. After all the articles regarding what indoor players will be crossing over, I have counted a total of 27 players. I'm going to guess that Taylor doesn't play this season of beach after her injury of her final indoor career. She was unknown already because of needing time to heal if she looks for a future professional career. But other than that there is the rumor of Carly Kan coming to UH to play beach which I have heard from multiple different people so must be true. Other than that the indoor players listed as potentially playing was Maglio, Castillo, Anderson, Guinasso, Sibley, Smith, Iosia, Mitchem, Higgins, Kahakai. A lot of talent but not sure how many will stay based on only 10-12 players getting to play.
