With Hawaii's loss and Irvine's unbeaten record could UC-Irvine be the new #1?

No, Hawaii's loss to Shanghai Oriental means little, It dosen't even count. Shanghai Oriental has a bunch of players from the Chinese National team on the roster, There isn't a men's collegiate team in the country who can beat them. It was a fun exhibition, but this loss by the Warriors will have absolutely ZERO effect on the Rankings. UCI will soon have a chance to dethrone the Warriors, but beating the Warriors will be a more difficult task than beating the Bruins was.

It isn't out of the realm of possibility. Technically it shouldn't matter, but you can never be sure what exactly the voters take into consideration. It would make whoever doesn't vote them #1 look pretty silly, I think. It would be akin to the #1 team dropping places for losing to team USA. I have been watching volleyball men's volleyball for almost ten years now, and no college team I've ever seen has looked as good as Shanghai did.

Hawai'i is #1 until a college team beats them. Period.

It would be funny if a bunch of people voted Irvine #1 though.
Who was the one vote for UCI at #1 last week? Anyone know?
I'd guess Speraw(my team's #1) or Scates(it took the #1 team in the country to beat us).

It could not have been John Speraw, for he is not one of the 19 voters:

Well according to the Honolulu advertiser, Mike Wilton didn't vote his team as number 1. So I'm guessing that he voted for UC Irvine to be number one.

BYU lost an exhibition match to that Canadian team before the 1st rankings went up, and they still ranked in at 5th. I dont think the Shanghai loss should have any relevance on the AVCA rankings.

How do they decide who gets a vote? I assumed it was all the D1 teams, and I know UCI got a vote last year.

The lost to Shanghai won't hurt Hawaii. That is a team of top players from China.
