Guest2 - with the Brazilian tour in full swing, I am hoping that many of the big teams show up and that they are in decent playing form. We have also been looking at an international tournament to go to - our pal went to Stavenger and said it was awesome - we were thinking of either Rome or one of the Majors in Gstaad or Hamburg would be kinda cool - if we go overseas, we definitely want to make it to a 4 or 5 Star double gender tourney!

Good point about the Brazilian teams. Id love to see Larissa in person. Maybe even brush up on some Portugese curse words just in case she happens to yell some at partner, opponents, refs whoever. I am definitely planning for an international event too. Im kind of conflicted on which one though. One of the 5 stars would be great, seeing all the top teams play each other, every day good matches, but I think there would also be something fun about one of the smallest events. Picking a lower ranked team playing well and following them all week, finding out about a bunch of teams I have never heard of, and maybe meeting a bunch of neophyte fans from somewhere like Iran or Bali (I wouldnt go to the Tehran event but I bet its an interesting place to be)

You know, that is a good point - the smaller the event, the more accessible and friendly it seems to be! Long Beach was not small, I know, but I remember meeting the fairly short Japanese women's team, Ishii and Murakami, last year after they made a nice little run at Long Beach, and they could not have been nicer, even when talking to us thru their interpreter! And the team from Vanuatu (which I had to look up because I had no idea where it was) is really fun to watch, and were also really cool, so I agree - the less well-known teams seem to get kind of excited if you know even a little bit about them and say hello to them, especially when they are so far from home themselves. And they even remember if you watch them more than once and root for them, and are so appreciative - that is kinda cool. And I am with you on Kish Island - I am actually pretty offended that the FIVB would support a continuing tournament in a place where women are not welcome to play (even though I just saw some article about an Iranian women's team, so maybe there is hope someday) - if they are not open to men and women, I say don't go there, but then I see the other side about exposing them to something different as well. Anyway, I also agree that maybe a smaller tournament at a cool location would be fun to go to, because to me, part of the whole experience is about seeing the host country, trying their food, meeting their people, etc.
