Just curious...who is everyone's pick for pre-season player of the year.
My picks are: Player of the Year: Costas Theocharidis- Hawai`i Freshman of the Year: Pedro Azenha- Hawai`i Coach of the Year: John Speraw(SP)- UC Irvine
Obviously my opinion is biased towards Hawai`i, but I really haven't seen any other freshman play yet, so maybe by the end of the season my opinion will change. But I honestly believe, Costas Theocharidis is the best player in the nation.
Anyone with opinions please post them up.

There will be a lot of players vying for POY: Curt Toppell (sp?) Dave Lee Costas Theocharidis many more from teams I don't follow closely enough....
I know that is a weasling answer.
Freshman of the Year: Duncan Bundinger ;D
Coach of the Year: John Speraw if he continues his winning ways.

Don't you all think that it is just a tad tooooooo early to be talking about POY and COY candidates. The season just started and there is a lot of VB left to play. There are no superstar teams out there this year IMHO. The competition will be close and there will be a lot of nail biting going on before the regular season ends, the MPSF Tournament(is there any other?) ends and the Final Four in the PYRAMID takes place!

It's early, but you can probably make some pretty good guesses.
Costas is the clear favorite. I'd say he's the most talented player in the country, and he's got a good team. POY almost always come from a team competing for the championship. This rules out talented guys coming from mediocre programs, like Tamas.
Toppel might be out for the same reason, and frankly, I don't think he really dominates the games enough on a consistent basis to win it.
Maybe Keenan, but pepperdine has to do a lot better than I think they will.
Pelzel? I don't think UCI will stay this strong throughout the season(though I'd like them too), and I don't think he really dominates a game the way a POY is supposed to.
Dave Lee? Are you kidding me?
I don't think UCLA has anyone special. If Hawaii does bad a Bruin might get it if UCLA does well this season, whether or not his individual talent merits it, but I don't see that as likely.
Really, barring some strange happenings, I don't see anyone other than Costas winning POY.

Eater,
You seem to be looking at things very objectively, so I'd like you opinion.
Costas has really upped his back court defense this year along with his serving so that should improve his chances for POY this year in my opinion. But the Warriors have a much more spread offense this year with Delano and the new mb hitting big time so he may not have as many huge KPG stats as before. Do you think his improved all round game will counteract his possibly smaller hitting numbers?

Against Lewis (I think it was Lewis), everyone else wasn't performing and Costas is the one that lead the team to win. That's one of those qualities coaches seem to look for in POY. But I agree with some of the others. He might be the front runner but a lot can happen and it might be too early to tell right now.

I would say though that everyone has seen Costas play in the past, and knows how good he is. Even if he doesn't get the same numbers this year everyone will know what he's capable of. It isn't even that he always knocks down huge numbers, but some of the shots he makes are just amazing. And he does them over and over and over again. He's a great hitter, and I think a small loss in his offensive stats would hardly be noticed, and a an improvement in other parts of his game would make him even more likely for POY.

I agree that it is way too early to make any predictions. Since I don't live in CA, I don't get to see everyone play and I have to rely on what I hear and the little bit I do get to see.
As far as Costas reduced K/G, as long as his hitting percentage stays high and the rest of his game has improved, then I don't see a problem.
