yes, top 4 four from each pool. then the quarters go:

Makes sense. Man, Group B is stacked. How did Group A get 2 easy passes with Kenya and Greece, both outside the top 20? Group B has 4 of the top 6 teams and all 6 are in the top 13. Unfair, imo.

It gives the host team the best odds of making it into the next round?

I guess so, but you'd think they would at least make it appear to be fair. Switch Kenya and the Dominican Republic or something like that.

It takes a little bit of setup to get associated with your lcoal cable company/etc. but I've been amazed with how accurate these listings were in the past, and since missing half of the match this morning, am looking for something to help find schedules:

Are there any sites that provide comprehensive match summaries? You can't really get a real for some of these matches by what they write.

USA vs. Germany will commence in 6.5 hours... I just figured out that Athens is -11 hours different from Honolulu...

Click the LIVE Results buttons above for livestats... Stay tuned to NBC during match time to catch part of it. I'm finding they are jumping to interesting competitions live, and not showing many tape-delayed, is anyone else finding this?

I have DirectTV in San Francisco, and so far, the schedule posted on the nbcolympics.com website has been very accurate. Each session is broken down in 1/2 timeslots by network and it has been right all the way through ....

If you don't have the HDTV station ... it's no big deal. All of the contents are repeats of the previous days events.

Wasn't it the same way for the '00 games in Sydney? Team USA was lucky to be in the same pool with Team Australia and Kenya and the host team never got out of pool play. At the '92 games(Barcelona) Team Spain was in an easy pool and they never made it out of pool play either. Shouldn't we know by know that when they draw for pairings that the host team somehow always end up in the "easy" pool. Can you imagine four years from now in China?

The host country is always given the #1 seed. Then they are assigned seeds by their decending order in world rankings (from earlier this year). Thus China who was #1 was seeded #2, the USA who was #2 was seeded #3 and so on down to the lowest ranked team who is assigned #12.

Then the pools are set up with pool A getting 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12 and pool B getting 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11. So if the host country is not highly ranked in the world (like Greece this year), then you'll have this kind of situation where two weak teams are in pool A.

But all of this is really not too bad if you're in pool B and can be one of the 4 teams that advance to the quarter finals. At least then you don't have to face again anyone else from your pool B until the semi's. Plus if you can finish 1st or 2nd in your pool, then your quarter final match should be against one of the weakest of 8 teams that are left.

So overall, being in a much tougher pool probably is not as bad a deal as one would first think.
