Women: USA gets little resistance from Norway 14 Aug. 2004
ATHENS, 14 August - Holly McPEAK and Elaine YOUNGS of the United States lived up to their reputation as one of the favourites for a spot on the podium, shutting out Norway's Susanne GLESNES and Katherine MAASEIDE 2-0 (21-14, 21-14) in Pool D of the Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Tournament.
It was the first step for McPEAK and YOUNGS in their quest to become the first U.S. women to win an Olympic Beach Volleyball medal.
The Americans, seeded fourth in the Olympic tournament, led throughout both sets and sailed to a comfortable 38-minute victory, the fastest so are of the opening day. Facing better serving, attacking and blocking, the Norwegians had no chance.
The victory places the Americans in the pole position of Pool D, tied with Canada's DUMONT/MARTIN, who had earlier in the day defeated Switzerland's SCHNYDER/KUHN.
GLESNES/MAASEIDE and SCHNYDER/KUHN remain without victory.
