This is going to make everything very interesting. The US loss to China wasn't that bad. But Cuba knocking off Russia hurt, especially since Cuba has already lost to Germany. Wednesday should give everyone a clearer picture with Russia and Germany against each other with Cuba and China going at it as well.

Telemundo should've broadcasted this match. Maybe they did and I missed out on a great match between these two rivals. This would have been a match to watch since these two teams are so physical. I hope Team USA can defeat Team Cuba(our number one NORCECA rival) - something Team USA has never done in Olympic competition. We have a chance don't we? I think so. Go USA! Cuba takes it 15-13 in the fifth.

NBC Olympics results shows that the Cuba/Russia match is "protested." Anyone know anything about that?
I think someone made the same note about another match in another thread, but it now looks like everything else is "official" except this match.

I am impressed with her, she is a good attacker, I think she outshined the M1 of the Cuban team, Barros. I read that she is the cousin of Regla Torres, she will be a great one

I watched the last 3 sets and it was not a high quality match. USA should be able to beat both Russia and Cuba if not Team USA really does not deserve a medal. Cuba lost to Russia in the round robin matches in 96 and 2000 and ended up winning gold in the end. This time they beat Russia but there is no way they will win gold. Cuba outblocked Russia which is not a surprise as they knew that the ball was going to either Gamova or Shachkova. With Russiai's predictable offense, they will be in trouble when they face USA. Jerry Estes is a coaching staff on the Russia team, he does not look as fit as he used too. He had an interesting look on his face whenever he watched his father in law barked at the players Ruiz hit at a ridiculously high percentage during the Grand Prix but she is struggling now.

Thanks for the commentary on the match.
Ruiz did have a horrible match. Her hitting percentage wasn't anywhere near where it normally is. Also, Gamova really struggled as well. Her hitting percentage was VERY low... for her.

Thanks for the commentary on the match. Ruiz did have a horrible match. Her hitting percentage wasn't anywhere near where it normally is. Also, Gamova really struggled as well. Her hitting percentage was VERY low... for her. I really wonder what Russia is up to. They have Artamanova and Tichentko on the roster but neither are playing right now. Russia is like paper tiger right now. Chackhkova had to play on the outside rather than opposite but she is doing well. Actually I think Gamova played alright in this match. Some of her kills are powerful, she did have to go against 2 blocks in almost every attempt. Ruiz is just off right now, maybe she is upset about losing the $15,000 to Tom at the Grand Prix ;D. 6 points which is quite many, separated her from Tom and yet Tom managed to caught up, I will be upset too. Oh I have to mention that the Russian setter is really bad, Karpol can only blamed himself for chasing away Elena Vass. Ana Fernandez who is one of my favorite player may not see any court action with the way Carillo is playing. I watch 17 years old Regla Torres subs for Calderon in 92 and did a great job and Torres is the youngest ever volleyball gold medalist. Carillo at 17 is in the same class as she performed marvellously but I give her 0% chance to be the next 17 years old volleyball gold medalist. This is the year that USA finally beat Cuba in the olympics tournament. They lost in five in 92 and was slaughtered in 96. Time for revenge

Watched all but the first set totally by chance (TV was not supposed to broadcast but did and I happened to be tuned in at the time...)
Both Artamonova and Tichenko are injured as far as I know (Tich had knee surgery a few months ago and was supposed to be ready for the OG but I guess she's not, as for Artamonova I've heard that she also carried a knee injury but she also has a chronic back injury that has been bothering her quite often as of late.)
My impressions... Russia still struggling with serve reception which makes life difficult for them. Absence of the two forementioned players really limits their offensive options; they have two addresses right now: Gamova and Sokolova in the corners or backrow but you pretty much know that they ball is going to one or the other. Of the few times they set the middles, quite a few were blocked. Both Gamova and Kilic were tired toward the end and blocked quite often.... It does not help that they were hitting to a double block (at least) most of the time.
As for Cuba, even though they sturuggled with the RUssian serve at times, their setters did a good job of distributing the ball. Lots of quick plays to which Rus had no answer.
Not as exciting to watch as the score suggests. Both sides with some errors and quite predictable plays.
As for Russia's new setter. She's not as good as what we're used to seeing from them (namely Vassilevskaia and Gratcheva recently) but she's young and has been at the helm for only about 6 months. She's better than Chukanova and I expect her to improve as time passes.
Cuba is bound to stuggle with the other big guns in this group and Ger will certainly give RUssia a run for their money. They are a young team with a lot of potential but it seems like this will not be their year for gold....
When Team USA plays these teams, serve reception will be a key factor. (Both CUB and RUS serves well) Both these teams can serve well and put up a decent block to follow these serves. Reception is USA's achilles heel and both these teams can exploit this on a good day (unlike Germany yesterday)
