With the FIVB points system Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes are ranked 7th amongst USAV beach teams. Only 6 spots for USA players in this FIVB event so they were left out. And yes since it is a "USAV sanction event" they would be able to play, with any winnings going toward actual expense only. Fendy picked up Hughes to help her gain points (and hopefully play well) with the hopes another main draw or qualy player would pick up Claes. The college athletes need points any way they can gather them for a run at the international FIVB events together after college. Some players had complained that C&H were given wild cards before for other events. Politics and points override logic and talent sometimes. Nice info! At this point Lauren isn't as dynamic as Kelly but an overall better and much more experienced player so I'm excited to see them play. Lauren and Brooke had a few very good 5th place finishes last year in grand slams/majors and I'd say Hughes is an upgrade at least in her offense. Wouldn't be surprised to see them medal. What is the plan once college season starts? Is Lauren going to play with Kelly? Lauren is not better than Kelly right now. The 5ths you refer to were almost exclusively a result of beneficial draws. In two events Claes/Hughes beat almost as man top teams as Fendrick/Sweat did all year. (Which is easy because Brooke and Lauren beat almost no one good) The fact that Lauren and Brooke got four 5ths without ever beating a top 10 team in the knockout rounds is more proof of just how stupid the FIVB format is.

Men: BURIK/KOLINSKE BURROW/MALLIN DOHERTY/MAYER HYDEN/BOURNE PAULIS/DENTLER PRIDDY/CASEBEER ROBERTS/LORENZ ROSENTHAL/CRABB SLICK/ALLEN Women: LANE/POLLOCK CLAES/REEVES FENDRICK/HUGHES HOCHEVAR/DAY LARSEN/FLINT MCCOLLOCH/VANZWIETEN PAVLIK/DOWDY ROSS/WALSH JENNINGS SWEAT/SUMMER TIEGS/PARDON Priddy and Casebeer could be something. If they stick together all year, a couple 5ths and a 3rd on the AVP are definitely in play. That can't be the final men's lineup.

I'm confused here. Claes & Hughes could have entered if they wanted, correct? Would just have to play in the country quota and qualifier. Is this just that Hughes opted to get into the main draw? It's not a perfect system, but Claes/Hughes will just have to grind through some tournaments where they're not in the main draw and eventually they'll no doubt end up with the points they need. Reading Here (http://www.fivb.org/EN/BeachVolleyball/Document/2017FIVB_BVB_Sports_Regulations_Final_20161202.pdf) It looks like entry points are the 2 player's points combined. NOT team earned points. Hughes playing with Fendrick gets them higher up the entry list. I'm surprised CLAES couldn't get a Higher ranked partner, but actually like her with Reeves. I assume that a lot of players don't want to ditch their regular partner for a one off, but I wonder if Summer won't regret not trying to get Hughes for this event. I thought Lane was backtracking and was playing this year. Claes would have been a great option for her.

If only 6 get in and there's 9 and 10 registered on both sides, with no country quote will all remaining teams get a chance in the qualifier? Still 3 very absent teams on the men's side.

Yeah, I still don't get this. What is the limit of six teams downtheline is talking about? If the limit just applies to the main draw and the rest can play in the qualifier, then I question the move of Hughes to switch partners just to get into the main draw.

Seems like a strange choice, but I haven't watched Hester play that much. From what I've seen she's super athletic, really good jump serve, but a bit unpolished. Also, not sure how big her presence is at the net.

I'm as confused as the rest.
Tourney says 32 teams a side, but anyone can register so there are 58 women's teams currently listed, including everyone and the kitchen sink from US - 10 teams. It does not yet breakdown main, qualifier & reserve. Still thinking the magic # is a limiting factor for C&H gaining entry as a pair, yet F&H are guaranteed main draw.
I'll stand corrected I'm sure when the smoke clears. I apologize if I have inadvertently posted false information from the people that "told me the facts" lol...
I will wager a guess that players like Fendy, April or Kerri pursue playing with either C, H or a Witt twin this season.

Who is Geena Urango playing with? I don't see her name on that list. Or Benny's for that matter....

Does Lauren have a regular partner now that Brooke is with Summer?

I'd take Lauren's blocking over Kelly any day. Kelly is way more fun to watch and has pretty awesome ball control for not playing Beach for too long and can BOUNCE a ball but I'd say for few tournaments I wouldn't be mad playing behind Lauren's block.

If you don't think April & Kerri will dominate, I would make many bets on that..., but we'll see, there is nothing to indicate they won't continue 2016 which was not too bad...IMHO....

We stayed at the Sea Club Resort in 2015, JB - if you don't mind the mile walk to the Ft Lauderdale Beach Park, it was a great location and pretty decently priced. We are at the Solas this year - $190 but its a two bedroom suite with a kitchen and sleeps 4, so that will end up being pretty reasonable for the 4 of us - also about a one mile walk to the venue. Too bad the Yankee Clipper is not still there like in the old AVP tournament days! I see 6 Brazilians teams registered and 5 from the Czech Republic - kinda cool! Does anyone know if there a six team limit to actually register, or can more teams sign up and then they simply play country quota matches? The Clipper is still there with underwater pool bar and all....just called B Ocean, now.

Thanks, Tinman! I see the prices are a little salty now - the Clipper was pretty reasonable back in the day. One of my fondest memories was running into Larry Witt the year he played the AVP tourney down there with Karch, and asking him what it was like to play with Karch, and he just does the forehead wipe thing and goes "phew" (as in, he is working my ass off in practice!!!) - that was kinda cool!

Have I missed some off season banter about the Crabb brothers, as in they have officially split up and are going to play with other partners from here on out?
