From the Gaucho Volleyball Site:
With the 2004 campaign quickly approaching, the
UCSB team is getting prepared for another marquee
season. With five out of six starters returning and a
strong recruiting class, this season is being greatly
anticipated by both the coaching staff and fans.
Megan Blackshire was a dominant force last year and
once again appears strong and ready to go. Olivia
Waldowski, now with a year of experience as a
Gaucho, is ready to dominate the middle blocking
position along with Megan. Freshman Brett Quirarte,
daughter of All-American volleyball player Dana Wall,
will look to contribute in the middle as well. Amy
Sarkaria and freshman Bethany Johansen will
compete for a starting position on the right side.
“I’m pleased with the shape that our middles are in
and, for an incoming freshman, Bethany is tough and
ready to contribute immediately – whether it’s on the
right or in the middle,” says coach Kathy Gregory. At
setter, senior Mari Bell, sophomore Jackie Davis and
freshmen Ashley Dutro and Kayce Matthess will be
battling it out for starting honors with the edge going
to Mari – a proven leader and tough competitor.
“Because of our depth in the setting position, we may
experiment with the 6-2 and utilize our size
advantage,” Gregory remarked. Outside hitter Janine
Sandell will be looked to for a tremendous amount of
offensive power – which she can deliver.
Sophomores Emily Hendrickson and Jamie Garbisch
will battle it out for starting positions opposite Janine.
Consistency, power and leadership are going to be
needed, especially from Emily and Jamie, to round
out the team’s offense and serve receive. Liberos
Kristin Nelson and Baylee Hassett will provide much
needed passing and defense for the team. Both will
be counted on for steadiness to lead the team to our
third consecutive Big West Conference
Championship.
