It's ridiculous that Arizona is ranked so low at #17...they are a Top 5 team as all six starters return.
Phenomenal KIM GLASS will be the Player of The Year in either her Junior or Senior year!

It's ridiculous that Arizona is ranked so low at #17...they are a Top 5 team as all six starters return. www.avca.org/collegiate/dipoll/dipoll12-24-03.aspThey return all six starters from a team that finish last season unranked. Actually they ended up 36th (with 7 points). The pre-season polls generally show a heavy bias towards how teams finished the previous season. If Arizona is as good as you believe this season they'll move up in the polls. Last season though, they started out 10th in the pre-season poll and ended up well out of the top 25. So being ranked 17th this year in the pre-season poll is a pretty decent move bringing them up 19 places and 493 points from the end of last season.

I agree. Kim Glass is a phenomenal athlete. I've been a fan of her since Juniors days. I'm sure her consistency will improve with maturity. Arizona will be an awesome team this year and next. I seem to recall a lot of serving problems. Hopefully, they have been working on serving. Serving errors can just kill the game.

In the article posted on the Arizona website, Coach Rubio states that several players (Glass, Abernathy, Ladd) are expected to have "breakout" years and that "We return the entire starting six from last year," Rubio notes. "That alone is an indicator that we’ll be much improved."
I would suggest that just because you have an entire starting six returning, doesn't necessarily mean that the team will be better and Rubio doesn't really state any particular reason that he believes that the three players will have breakout years. Just being around and having experience doesn't equate to being or getting better. I'd feel a lot better about Arizona's chances if he had said something about the players' offseason dedication or training or something. In Glass' case, didn't she play with a national A-2 team or something? How did she do? What facets of these players' games have they improved?
Arizona has so much talent. I'd really like to see them do well and surprise the teams in their conference that were picked by the coaches to finish above them. I guess we'll just have to wait until the season starts to see what kinds of improvements are in store this year.

Woo Hoo, Arizona has all its starters back and has a load of talent. Woo Hoo! Big deal. The Wildcats proved last year they couldn't play as a team. All the talent in the world and all the starters returning doesn't mean anything.
When it comes down to it, a player like Kim Glass has alot of talent and can mash the ball, but as far as her progression as an ALL-AROUND player goes, there really hasn't been any. If you look at a team like Colorado State, it has decent talent, unheralded talent, but they have players who play together and with certain intangibles, including heart.
Not to say Arizona is heartless, but it will NOT win the Pac-10, who are you kidding BIK? Wildcat fans can all hope and pray and assume that they'll be that much better with another year under their belt. The girls' biggest worry is looking good on the court. And admittedly Bre Ladd does look very good on the court.

Coach Rubio's interview reveals the same old - same old coach speak: Incoming players will be vying for starter positions, experience will help, looking for leadership of upperclassmen...... With all the hype of the incoming freshman setter, why doesn't Arizona go with the rest of the collegiate flow and run a six two ?

Here it comes. Another year of bashing the Wildcats. Why? Rubio has done a great job with his program over the passed several years. Why not give him the credit he deserves A lot of the top program have bad years from time to time With great players. Why are they different? Well, now that I think of it, It's been done to Long Beach too. Sad . They have always ran a good program too! How do we turn on teams so easily? Some of the poster sound a little bitter. I think Arizona's ranking is a good one. If they are better they will prove it. To Ant Mag: How many teams in the Pac 10 do you think will run a 6-2 and follow what you think everyone else is doing or should be doing?

I think Arizona has the potential to win the Pac-10, but I don't think it'll happen. They'll be the scariest team in the NCAA's on any given night though!
Meaning, I think they can beat any team out there. But, then again, they could lose to any team too!

Rubio doesn't know who his setter is after 2-a-days! Does he go with a sophmore or another year of a frosh starter in the Pac 10?
1 month until Stanford/Cal on the road. Weekend after it is USC/UCLA at home.
Here's hoping for a breakout!

Arizona will be a team that will be fun to watch but very stressful for their fans. This team has the potential to do really well. They have a terminator in Glass and some good players around her. The training over the summer should have improved her game a bit so I am expecting her to hit for a much higher percentage this year. The players around Glass are also very good, and with a year under there belt, they can be a bit more sure of themselves.
Arizona also has the potential to be very bad. Last year, they were a young team without a lot of confidence and suffered from inconsistency. It also felt like they didn't have any team chemistry. Without these intangibles, they wont make it very far. I think the first 5 matches of the season will make or break this team. If they get some confidence, they will do damage in the Pac 10. If they lose a lot of matches, they will lack confidence and that might be a mental block for them throughout the season.

I thought midway through the season last year that Arizona really turned into a powerful team. The UH match was the kicker, I thought.
But they stumbled a tiny bit at the end of the season losing to UCSB, and lost to Wisconsin (which I attributed to the coach's complaining about being sent to Texas).
What could have been a very impressive end of season, transferring over to this season was tripped up by a couple of devastating late season losses.
They have unlimited potential!
